yeah legolas, you know, the ones that sang hotel california. duh......

but seriously,

well, gandalf seemed to be in a bad situation until joe walsh,( i think he was an eagle, ) swooped down, mesmirized sauruman with some hot guitar licks and picked up gandy while singin life in the fast lane.

but seriously,

the eagles always seemed to come through at the most crucial of times, i forget their names thats why i just wrote eagles.

basicly, the same as everyone else.
I agree. But I also have another totally different list based on an alternative POV in LOTR:
1. Tom Bombadil - the main protagonist of his own adventures against boredom
2. Goldberry - the leading lady
3. Frodo - leader of the diversion
4. Sam
5. Merry or Pippin

Wow. Only five? Okay, in no particular order-

1. Gandalf

2. Frodo

3. Sam

4. Gollum

5. Boromir (Without him, the breaking of the fellowship wouldn't happen, and who knows how the story would have turned out)

Frodo

Eru (He started EVERYTHING)

PS- this is in no real order...

and what with Sam? he was very important. without him the ring was Sauron's.
I think Ero wasn't so important in that book.

yes, you're right. I think that Sam isn't important to the world as Ero or the Valar but Sam is more important in the book then Ero because Ero did nothing to help the fellowship.

The most important characters are:
Gandalf
Frodo
Aragorn
Sauron
Gollum

I put Gollum instead of Sam because if Gollum hadn't been at Mount Doom at the end, the ring would have never been destroyed.

you are right Durin, the ring wouldn't be destroyed but if Sam wouldn't come to help Frodo the ring wouldn't be destroyed anyway.
and welcome to entmoot Durin!

This is an impossible question. The chances of the Fellowship actually working were about one in a million. Literally. But, the actions of ALL the characters reflected off each other in a certain pattern that made that one in a million come through. You could say that Fattie Bolger was the most important and make a good argument. It was just the combination of all the characters actions that made them reach their goal. But I'll try it anyways.

1. Sauron (Hey, without him there isn't a Fellowship at all!)
2. Gandalf (He was the brains of the operation. Without him, it
would have fallen apart in the first night.)
3. Sam (Yes, I think he's more important than Frodo.
Think of all the things he did. Plus, for the short time he
carried the Ring he did just as well if not better than
Frodo.)
4. Aragorn (Good job leading the Fellowship while Gandalf was on
on sick leave)
5. Frodo (I had to put him in because he did the dirty work of
actually carrying the Ring. I think others could however,
have done just as well or better.

Hey! I just did the impossible!

The five characters that contributed the most to the destruction of the Ring were Gandalf, Gollum, Frodo, Samwise, and Aragorn.

Gandalf took care of the details and other things
Aragorn challenged Sauron.
Frodo bore the burden.
Gollum and Samwise helped him and made his success possible.

Sauron
Isildur
Gollum
Bilbo
Frodo

They are all "ring bearers". I don't count Deagol or Sam because they had it too sort a time.

Gandalf

Pailan, do you realy think that Isildor or Bilbo are more important than Gandalf or Frodo? I don't think so. And I'm not sure that Isildor had the ring for a long time.

No, I don't think that Isildur is more important than Gandalf. My line of thinking, is that with these folk the ring and therefore the plot is moved forward. Yes, it's flawed thinking because the ring could've been found by anyone... I just wanted to try out something a bit different.
