I could have sworn I read somewhere else that Tolkien said that the Glorfindel's were different Elves and not the same, I will see if I can find it....

And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin "Oh. Here it is, it is from the Encylopedia of Arda, and they put together a good point, so I guess it is a debate like the Balrog one

Glorfindel couldn't have been having an affair with arwen. The reason is simple: elves don't have affairs.
Remember, elves marry once and that is for life You can count on one finger the number of elves who ever remarried, and that turned out quite badly. In that case, it is ridiculous to suppose that elves would ever have sexual relations outside of marriage.

I think it may be that elves do not have affairs, but they are not always good wives or husbands. Think of Galadriel who left Celeborn in middle-earth when she went to Valinor. And they had fights before that.

Bah. We all know that balrogs had wings of shadow. And dammit, I'm going to have to revise my previous theories on Glorfindel. *sigh*
