The Balrog looked really unintelligent. For something of the same race as Gandalf he was a bit thick!

i liked it when the Balrog roared, and his face turned from Flame-to stone, then it had red lava veins, then it turned back to black and flame again
that was a reall good bit of CGI. |

Aldesign -
If ur thinking about the whiteness in his mouth when he roared - that was white hot fire IMO. Even though there may be disagreements with what a Balrog looked like - it was the BEST thing in the movie.

even though I can't really see it in my head, I guess since Tolkien described it as such, then it has wings
IMO = In my opinion INHO in my humble/hobbitish opinion

Not the Balrog wings issue again . . .
In the movie, as well, the balrog didn't have definitive wings. But it definitely had horns.

Let's not forget that Tolkien merged a lot of standard mythology and religious features (although his work is NOT religious) into his own works.
That the balrogs are physically and theoretically Tolkien's version of the Devil doesn't suprise me at all - although what I think is nice is that there are many of them and although they are rock ard, they are ultimately not the greatest evil there is As for the wings, in the long distance shot of him walking towards Gandalf and the bridge they do stretch from wall to wall. Perhaps you simply wish the walls were further apart Not seeing them to start with - wings are often folded up on creatures, otherwise it makes moving through smaller areas more tricky. And finally, I doubt the wings ever enabled Balrogs to fly - let's not forget that Balrogs chose a form designed to cause pant-wetting, one aspect of which is simply to look hyoooooge. Wings add to the feeling of physical size. Hence also the shadow and flame - two things people traditionally aren't very happy with. What interests me now is that several (there were about seven Balrogs in total right?) Maiar chose the same form. From this I would guess that although they chose the same form, they were NOT identical. I'd think that each Balrog would have subtle (or otherwise) differences. Possibly some didn't have horns. Or wings. Or whatever |

But seriously, I like how Prof T leaves us with descriptions that leave enough (neither too little nor too much) to the imagination. They get caught in our minds because they are fantastic, yet linger on because they are left unanswered. I must admit, though, that the balrog in the film did some pretty good posing (Run menacingly at the camera, ooh maybe I should show my biceps more, here's a ROARRR!!! , hope they got that. Turn and show the wings for half the fans, now turn again and make them fade like shadows for the other half...ooh..ooh..yeah Am I bad or am I BAD!).

whatever floats your boat, be it wings or water
really, i didn't ever imagine the balrog, i accidentally skipped from the middle of the council of elrond to the second chapter of the next book, ttt, when i first read it.... so the movie image seems to stick in my mind.. but now that i have read that a few times over, in context, the movie one seemed a biit dumb to be a demon of the old times, didn't it?
