Well, I can't speak to the GREATEST guitarists ever, because that would be getting into technicality and these questions are always more along the lines of who's one's FAVORITE. Paramount among the guitarists who turn me on is Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro. Since George Harrison keeps popping up, I gotta defend my personal idol John Lennon. I'm one Beatles fan who (blasphemy!) prefers John's guitar playing to George's. As Lennon put it once, "If you compare me to someone like B.B. King I'd be embarassed, but I can make a rock move." yeah!!! I am also unapologetically KISS Army, so I gotta give props to Ace Frehley.

HEAR HEAR.

I have to agree. Many of the guitarist listed here are not great guitartist I my opinion, but they are guitarist that people like.

I will not name the ones that I think are average guitarist on lists because I do not want to get into arguments.

If I were to give a acting example it would be like someone saying who is the best actor and people putting Keanu Reeves in the same vain as Daniel Day Lewis.

Keanu might be someone's favorite but....

For me, it is extreme technical excellence that I consider that makes one a great. Due to this Heavy Metal Neo-Classical Fusion really gets me moving. I get to hear what Vivaldi and Bach would have sounded like with electric guitars.

Blues is not to much for my deep musical taste.
I generally do not think pop musicians qualify.

Most of the people I have listed below are skilled in acoustic style also.

For fear I might leave some people out, I will name people who fit BOTH criteria for me technical excellence and I REALLY enjoy.

Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple, Blackmore's Night, Blackmore's Kingdow and Rainbow. The solos in

Child in Time and Gates of Babylon are pieces that most would agree are masterpieces

His Spanish and other acoustic works are great.

Akira Takasaki from Loudness. The best guitarist fron The Land of the Rising Sun.

Ynwgie Malmsteen. The Rising Force album put him on the map as a guitar god. However, he has become redundant and boring.

Marty Friedman. His heavy solo work and work with Cacophony and Megadeth is great.

Speaking of Megadeth, I would include Dave Mustiane.

Brad Gillis with the FIRST Night Ranger album and his work with Ozzie on the Speak of the Devil live album. King of the wah wah pedal.

Speaking of Ozzie, Randy Rhodes. The first two Ozzie solo albums were the best. Over the Mountains and Diary of a Madman are great guitar pieces.

The guys from Blind Guardian and Demons and Wizards.

Jeff Goldy in his Dio days.

Dave Chastian

Kirk Hamment

Joe Satrioni

Imperitelli the first ablum.

Glen Tipton from Judas Priest

The next tier for my taste are

Vivian Campell in his Dio days.

Tony Iommi ( Black Sabbath) of any era.

Kai Hansen form Helloween and Gamma Ray

Adrain Smith and Dave Murray from Iron Maiden

The guitarists from Funkedelic. The best guitar song being Cosmic slop.

Ulric Von Roth early Scorpians and solo work.

Matthais Jabbs later Scorpions ( Blackout guitar solo)

The Guitarist from Aria. They are basic the Russian version of Iron Maiden

Mick Mars Motely Crue. Specifically the Shout at the Devil album.

George Lynch with Dokken

The guitarist for Danzig.

Angus Young from AC/DC. The For Those About To Rock We Salute You album and BEFORE. The post FTATRWS albums just went down hill.

I gotta run ciao.

A handful that I named above are not GREAT as far as virtuosity but have a style I like.

*EDIT* Jason Becker Cacophany and solo work and EARLY EDDIE VAN Halen

Hmmm, I understand what you are saying, but....I don't agree! Less can be so much more. I'll take the clean lines and pure sound of Power Pop and the rythmic finesse of rockabilly anyday. I find most heavy metal much too "heavy"! Sort of like a testosterone nightmare!

My musical taste is deep also, (IMO) but nothing like yours! I prefer subtle and smooth, no sledge hammers needed!

That's why I also added that most of the people I mentioned were also skilled at the acoustic guitar. Their non-testosterone music is quite beautiful.

Blackmore basis most of his solo pieces off of cello pieces.

To each their own.

You can have Keanu. I will take Daniel Day-Lewis.

Oh, I should add that I meant what moves me deeply, not that my music taste are deep. But, I will also say I don't think that they are shallow.

Hey I resent being told that my musical taste is akin to Keanu worshipping from someone who listed Scorpian!

I yeah if you truly like guitar you love Danny Gatton. Theres no getting around it. He was such a talent. He was from this area originally and resettled back here before his untimely suicide. Saw him a few times in tiny little bars just ripping the frets like no one else could.

Afro-Elf, I had not mentioned many of the guitarists you have simply because most are not very well known and therefor people would not appreciate their talent. But I am glad that you have taken the time to list some of them. We also share the same views of what makes a guitarist greate, mainly the technical skill. And if you want to make a case for technical skill there is no better genre than metal and neo classical.

Boy, my husband would have loved seeing him at the bars! (understatment! ) Gatton's work with Gordon was really exciting. Gordon's deep strong rockabilly vocals and Gatton's guitar work was a thrilling combination live. I think it was "The Humbler" Lp that he played on. It's funny, Gordon's other guitarist, Link Wray, is so er....rough, yet he sounded good with Gordon also. Mas macho! So Danny Gatton comitted suicide! Tell me more? That is sad.

Ok, ok! To each his own! Just don't get a "superiority complex" on us! heh heh! "Moves you deeply" works very well! I can understand that! I must say, when I hear that type of music, I always start laughing....don't know why, I guess the "oh, that was so HEAVY man" image tickles my funny bone. Oh no! I've started thinking about "Spinal Tap"!

I like AC/ DC, (till my ears start to hurt), and YES. You know me though, my music must be danceable! (ok "Boogie Man" you can stop laughing! )
