Couldn't the Balrog have had a larger then Man sized structure? It seems as though the Balrog was capable of useing maybe the power of illusion with darkness, but yet it was a impentetrable thing. The battle with Fingon makes me think this.

"Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, High Captain of Angband was come, and he drove a dark wedge between the Elven hosts surrounding King Fingon, and thrusting Turgon and Hurin aside toward the Fen of Serech."

So it seems that they remain the same size but manipulate darkness.

I always pictured them as a man shaped umbra with a semisolid perumbra.

The first time I read the books, I thought that they were about the size of a hobbit, and bounced around holding a whip and a soward(sp). I was amazed when I saw it in the movie. it was Huge!

LOL!

Sorry, I don't mean to laugh at your interpretation of the balrogs. Everyone has a different imagination and can 'see' things as they want, but...

Wow, hobbit-size! AHA ha ha! I think it would be funny and scary at the same time. I keep imagining a little gremlin-type thing running around really fast and growling. Sorry, but that is way too funny!

I could just picture gandalf standing n the bridge of khazad-dum fighting with a bouncing yoda with a light saber
gandalf "you cannot pass !!!"
balrog a.k.a. yoda "me cannot pass gandalf says he does!WAHEY WEE BOING BOING BOING!!!"yoda jumping up and hitting gandalf on the head.
gandalf "Quit it, QUIT IT!! OH BUZZ OFF YOU LITTLE FLY!!!!"whack
gandalf hits yoda and yoda falls on the ground gandalf starts laughing trips up falls on yoda and squishes him!! bridge collapses.

THE END

Yea, I suppose a hobbit size balrog would be pretty funny. if it was in the movie than i am sure everyone would be thinking:

"wow! a hobbit size balrog! Now why are they scared of that?? it must have pretty sharp teeth!"

just a thought...

Have any of you heard "little bunny fu-fu" ?? well how about "little bunny Balrog" ?? something like this:

"Little jumping Balrog hopping through the forest
picking up the fellowship and bopping em' on the head!"

lol.......

Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, on the bridge of Kazad-dum waving her umberella under Gangalfs nose........about as near to a hobbit-sized Balrog as I can imagine

Good point tho', Balrogs are as big or as small as your imagination wants them to be

Quite true. Nothing I can say will make this statement untrue, but I offer some (fittingly) vague evidences.

1. According to Tolkien in The Road Goes Ever On (I will quote it if so requested), when the Valar took on humanoid forms, they were never gigantic. Taller than the tallest of Elves or Men one can be sure (and the tallest was Thingol, but we don't know how tall he was), but not gigantic. Morgoth, Tolkien said, was "ogre-sized". Sauron also was one who Tolkien said, when he took on humane form, was not gigantic.

2. The words used in the Lord of the Rings to described the size and shape of The Balrog are "of man-shape maybe, yet greater". That's all we got.

Put 1 and 2 together. I don't think our Balrog will come to so much as 20 feet, and I would venture to say even between 10-15 feet tall, not taking into account the fire and darkness surrounding it.

The one I saw on the 70 IMAX theater screen looked reallllly big. If it had been in 3D as well, half the seats would have been wet.

on my Lotr book there is a balrog picture, and it looks like a man, just a burning man, with a sword and a whip. It was taller then a man, but looks like a man.

I imagined them looking like a dragon, just burning one.

Well, what about...balrog babies...?

Or runts...or balrogs with stunted growth...don't forget them!

*snickers* Hobbit size balrog...

well I sorta make a similar mistake, the sizes between hobbits and dwarves...aren't dwarves supposed to be bigger?

Wayfarer, lovely sig.

I think there aren't any baby Balrogs. Balrogs don't have babies.
