Theoden ok!

ok if gandalfs staff had no power well then why ,in the two towers, did king theoden want gandalfs staff to be taken away from him? I know gandalf would not hit him with it ( POW)!

the staff itself did not have any power. Think of it as an electrical socket it does not have any power of its own but it does provide power. The staff kinda just focuses the power of gandalf but the actual staff is pretty irrelevent he could do just as well with any object possiably.

Enough with the ill-thought out questions.

The association of the istari with their staffs would have been enough to put the fear of slugs into Theodan. Like he'd know the exact usage of the damned thing.

Gandalf hi

I think the reason sauraman took away Gandalf staff is because it is powerful!

Treebeard i think i got it

now i know for sure that a staff repesents some short of power because i just read the chapter where sauraman gets his staff tooken away and that i think repusents that he got his power taken away well not his power but his authority!

i always thought that an istaris staff was not there power but a symbol and a way of , i cant think of a word but maybe exerting or enforcing that power... example in the hobbit when the company set up camp for the night in that cave and the Goblins jump them and Gandalf reacted quickly and killed 2 with a flash of light from his staff.
as for Gandalf getting his staff back after losing it too gandalf i know it wasnt a mistake and that is definitaly a different staff apparently the end of the staff is different... i wouldnt have a clue where he got his staff back from... where did he go when he was rescued from orthanc to rivendell? i dont think that an Istari's staff would be that hard to make i think that it is the Wizard himself that is most of the hardwork to do the extraordinary things....

good point milline but why was sauraman so weak with out his staff? it sould not affect him supposedly right? the staff has to mean more then just a walking stick!

this is no more than a guess but it seems likely i dont think that he was so weak i think that the power was still there which he proved with his near takeover of the shire i think he just didnt have any way to actually convey that power... he was by no means weak but he was just weaker than gandalf who by that stage had taken over as head of the order...
this is in no way a fact just a mere guess.

i cant check this up as im in work ( and working damn hard ! ) but doesnt gandalf say something about " for a while i was sent out to wander blah blah blah...naked i was sent back..." anyway he goes to lothlorien where he is clothed in white.... was he given a new staff there ?, if anyone has access then maybe they can check ?I think it im[potant to remeber that the staff was only a "symbol" of a wizards power - the Istari , unlike Souron , could only use what power they learnyt whilst in ME, they could not use their true powers .

ViggosBeard i think you are talking about after gandalf fights the Balrog we're talking about after he gets it taken off him by Saruman in Orthanc

There are a few flaws in the movie but i think there will allways be an excuse so i wouldnt worry about them. unless if u include things like sam's hobbit foot falling off when he gets in the boat with Frodo etc. I also agree with Millane Gandalf is that powerful that he could use a twig just about.

gandalf's staff

i agree with the thery that Gandalf did not really need his staff, after all he had a ring of power and was backed by Illuvator.

Wayferer i beg your pardon but what does that have anything to do with the subject apart from gandalf being in it...?

Gandalf

I think it was just a big mistake. Saruman wasn't saposed to take Gandalf's staff anyways. But Gandalf could'nt go on without his staff!(do I sound a little confusing?)

no i am positive it wasnt a mistake... cant remember where i read it but there is something somewhere about his staff being different... the one he got taken off him had a bit for his pipe and the one after had a little nook for the light in moria. and something about the ends were different... ones little twig things at the end went up while the others went to the side
still bit hazy though... my friend has borrowed my copy so i cant go check
while were on the subject of gandalfs staff how awesome is his new one for TTT
