Serious deja vu...I could have sworn that I've seen this thread before. And posted on it. Eh, well. Whatever.

And my copy of FotR says the same thing at the back. Is that Tolkien's definition of which two towers they were?

I had an idea that that was an editorial insert, but I'm not sure. In Letters he certainly wasn't gearing towards those two particular towers.

(And yes, this has gone on in another thread...)

How so? This is the book forum, and PJ is NOT the definitive version of LOTR.

I agree with you BeardofPants.
There are many towers in LotR and I think it's up to everyone to find out for themselves which ones they think it is. No one can decide except perhaps Tolkien

Cirith Ungol/Minas Morgul was most definitely a tower. It was built to complement Minas Tirith and they were opposites, the Tower of the Setting Sun and the Tower of the Rising Moon, with Osgiliath, the capital of Gondor, in between straddling the Anduin.
I wasn't talking about Minas Morgul, I was talking about Cirith Ungol.

If I were Tolkien, I would've named that volume "The Two Hobbits" so that it would be more confusing. Well, maybe we could make it more specific to Frodo and Sam with "The Two Hobbitses" as told by good ole Smeagol.

Seriously, I thought that it was Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith since Minas Morgul was once Minas Ithil and twin of Minas Tirith.

Hmm, it could be Frodo and Sam or Frodo or Gollum or Merry and Pippin..........

One more time: We don't know what towers the title refers to. I would put my money on Orthanc and Barad-dur, if I had too.

Maybe they were towers that stretched like shadows and not real towers at all. LOL

I think It's Orthanc and Bra-dhur, because frodo and sam are heading in that general direction and the rest of the fellowship are trying to bring down Orthanc, It realy depends on a persons opinion really

Hang on: I've got the solution to the dilemma! It's the two invisible intangible non-existent towers that the Ents built deep in the Fangorn forest where they plotted the downfall of Middle-Earth!
Just keeping you on your toes.

The publisher made up the title, not Tolkien, or so I've heard. So it's one of the first impure additions to the oft-stained canon.

asked one of my friends about this. He said that he thought it was orthnac and barad dur. And yeah, in the movie supposedly its Orthnac at isenguard and saurons orthnac. But i dont remember Sauron having an Orthnac because Isenguard and Orthnac was built before Saurunam was bad. maybe this doesnt make any sense at all

It is not true that the Two Towers are not known.

They are clearly Orthanc and Minas Morgul. The question is: Do you care? since Tolkien didn't like the title or make that decision. But the publisher (who chose the title) most certainly identified Orthanc and Minas Morgul both by written word, at the end of the original fellowship, and by the cover of the original Two Towers.

The fact that Tolkien didn't create the title, or even like it, doesn't change the fact that the people who did, clearly identified the "Two Towers" to which they were refering.
