i agree on Carlos, BB and Jimmy Page... but it's harder to nail them down to a single song or two... on all three i enjoy the live stuff the most
i've seen BB and Carlos many times and JP twice... also got the new Zep dvd for xmas, which has some awesome stuff on it

True, it's harder to pick out one song for them (I've never seen Santana play live. Not sure that I would without the benefit of a time machine), but the one that sticks in my mind for BB King is "Every day I have the blues"
Surely BB has to get the nod for averaging over 250 performances per year since the 1950s! Last edited by The Gaffer : 01-14-2004 at 02:01 PM. |

Guitarists themselves voted for Hendrix, Duane Allman and BB King (in a poll for Rolling Stone reported in the ) Independent newspaper
Ah, forgot about the Allman Brothers. Whipping Post features some pretty awesome axe weeping. |

i play myself and two of the covers we play most often are "everyday i have the blues" (fast and funked up a bit) and whipping post... also southbound, though that tune is a bit more keys oriented
i'd suggest carlos live too... i've seen him about 20 times from the early 80s to a year ago and he's always stayed pretty true to his roots... especially live, lots of jamming

Wise recomendations. Santana is the second best live band in the world. Allman Brothers is the first (thats why I included Dickie Betts earlier on this thread). Yeah and I know im gonna hear it now from all the dead heads...

Maiden is a very literary group of people. A lot of their songs make references to books, particularly fantasy. (Lord of the Flies, The Sheriff of Huddersfield, Out of the Silent Planet . . .) They are, of course, also fascinated by history. More specifically historical struggles. (The Trooper, Ides of March, Aces High, The Clansman, Alexander the Great . . .) Yipes, so anyway the point there is that they are a smart group of people as well. And back to good solos . . . The Clansman by Iron Maiden has a very atmospheric sound to it. Nothing overly technical, at least not in the way of speed and all that. It fits.

I love guitar. I am going to take lessons this year (or, I hope i am).
I mostly like rock. But I also like Jewel, Kate Rusby, Altan, and some other artists I can't think of now...I don't know what my fav. song is. Way too hard to decide.

There's an mp3 of me playing bass and guitar and singing (multitracked) at soundclick, covering an old blues standard.
Key to the Highway I also play sitar and ukulele. Needless to say, I'm a big George Harrison fan. But while he was a lead guitarist, he never did amazing stunt guitar leads. Still he played so many melodies that his playing will live in my ears till I die.

Hendrix (Hear My Train A Comin')
Johnny Winter (Mean Town Blues) Clapton & D. Allman (Derek and the Dominoes - everything) Jimmy Page (amazing in concert) C. Santana (best jammer) Other notables: BB King Stevie Ray Vaughn Joe Satriani John Lee Hooker Eddie Van Halen Yingwe Malmsteen Hedrix is still the greatest; in a class by himself since everyone that came after is an imatator to some degree. He invented the modern guitar style.

erm, bump?
lookin through this thread, i notice there is too little black sabbath mentioned, Tony Iommi is most certainly the world's greatest axe-wielder, and the best solo is on Nightwing, from the album Headless Cross, or perhaps I on the album Dehumanizer, or even NIB on the album Black Sabbath |

I like guitar alot!
Much of what I like is mentioned, and alot of things I need to seek out, BB King for example, can't remember hearing anything from him. Queen - Killer Queen Man! That must be the one solo in the world for me! Brian May is a genius! David Gilmour's guitarwork is to me complete shivers. Comfortably Numb is love.
