They haven't heard anything like that here - so I don't know how they know that yet. The tapes haven't been reviewed and when the shuttle broke up it was on reentry - so right now they're saying that some tiles might have come off.

Unbelievable and shocking! I remember when challenger blew up. One of the astronauts, Judy Resnick was from Akron Ohio and her and her family use to live not far from my house.

So sad to see this happen again.

The NASA chappy in the press conference seemed pretty adamant that the re-entry was precisely as it should have been, so not sure where this speed story came from. He said the shuttle was performing a "reversal" (which sounded like roll) at the time contact was lost. If so, rolls tend to stress the wings the most so maybe that's where the problem was.

Sad day. I wonder what this means for the International Space Station? It sort of depends on the shuttle.

I saw that on the news and I can't believe it. How terrible for their families.

I don't think they could have done anything even if they did know what was wrong. it had something to do with the tiles on the bottom i think.

Oh.
I don't know which would be worse, knowing your about to die and can't do anything about it or just dying all of a sudden. either way it's really sad.

i found out after i got out of orchestra at 12:00. its pretty sad. its also bad for the isrealies cause they had their first person going into space and they lost them. i just wish they had better footage/information that way maybe nasa could figure out what went wrong.

re

People die everyday... in some respects, they were more fortunate than some in that they didn't suffer terrible deaths, and acutally did something with their lives before they departed this world. I still think the space program is wasteful when there are so many poor/dying people out there that could use that kind of money.

i don't think the space program is a waste of time but i do agree there are people who could benifit greatly from that kind of money. with the kind of money movie stars, althletes, Disney, etc makes they could really help all those starving and in need of medical attention kids you see on TV.

The space program is not a waste of money. A lot of what makes peoples lives much better have come through discoveries which have been made through the space program.

The space program is no different than what man was doing during the early sea faring days.

Never said it was a waste--just that it was wasteful. Its kinda like buying an ultra-luxury car when you could keep a small village alive.

Do you or are you going to give all your money away to others? We don't need TV - I'm sure you can go through life without the internet, technically we don't need cars or even clothes. For that matter - what kind of sneakers do you wear - unless you get your shoes at a bargain basement - then that can be considered extravagent (especially if they're name brand and they cost $100)

These are scientists who are doing their job and making scientific discoveries.

The space program is potentially the greatest investment man could ever make in his future. In fact its not even close. And I will never be able to understand the short sitedness of people who dont understand this and think we should scrap it and put it all toward some other pork barrell project (although I salute your genuine concern in wanting to help the poor). But the hypocrisy of people (not necessarily you here) who have no problem going to war for oil so they can fill their SUVs full of cheap gas and turn around and say the space program is a waste of tax dollars.

And the bottom line is when you say the space program is wasteful you are also insinuating that these people wasted their lives for nothing. And I am certainly going to give you the benefit of the doubt here that you certainly didnt mean that. And that you believe that their lives and their jobs DID have purpose and benfit. Dont you?

I was gone all day...but I heard about this first. It was so sad! One of the astronauts was from Racine...that makes it even more depressing to me.
A weird thing...my mom found a copy of an old "National Geographic" this morning...it was the one covering the 1st Columbia mission. It was such a strange coincidence, considering she could have picked up any of the about 100 old "National Geographic"s we have in the basement.

The difference between the Space shuttle tragedies, in hindsight, with the early seafaring days mishaps is the media. Back then, news comes to people in trickles. Now, one can find out about it at almost the same time as everyone else does so it becomes larger than life.

However, It is sad, nonetheless. I mourn the demise of these people and can't imagine how their families are taking this.
