Norwegian Minister Is Pelted With Cake

OSLO, Norway - Norway's new finance minister, Kristin Halvorsen, was hit in the head with a cake Tuesday at the start of her first full day as a member of government, police said.

Halvorsen, the 45-year-old leader of the Socialist Left Party, was not injured in the attack and declined comment.

Rune Henden, of the Oslo police, said the attacker, whose name was withheld, was detained but that no motive had been determined.

"He is being interrogated," Henden said by telephone, adding the attacker could face charges.

Halvorsen joined the new government Monday as part of a Red-Green coalition that won September's national election.

Upon arriving at her ministry, Halvorsen entered the building but returned to the street when told that a well-wisher wanted to give her a cake.

As the man, identified only as being in his 20s, unpacked the cake, Halvorsen realized what was happening. She turned and moved away away, so the cake hit her in the back of the head.

According to the Internet edition of Norway's largest newspaper, Verdens Gang, the man told reporters that he did not think Halvorsen should be finance minister.

After 30 years in the political opposition, her left-wing party joined a government for this first time in its history as part of the coalition led by Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg of Labor.

It's so nice to see you paying attention to what's going on in Norway Spock!

As it says, someone didn't like Halvorsen as finance minister. When thinking about it, I think that is some sort of tradition here, to throw a cake at one of the new ministers. Don't ask me why, but it's people who can't stand that her or he became this or that. Maybe some viking blood?

Well, I'd rather be caked than egged....least you can eat some of it. Now, why would they call the person who threw the cake an "attacker?" Prankster more like it.

I wondered about that myself. Verdens gang wrote about it like the cake was a weapon, so the 'attacker' truly intended to harm her. I don't know
