Our/my team won the state mock trial competition yesterday. We played the charter school (yes...since this is DE there is just one school known as "charter" ) in the final round; it was close and probably could of gone either way since judging is naturally subjective...but I am elated they picked us! I think what tipped the scale (and did the same two years ago when we played Charter in the finals and won) was their in-your-face court tv style. They got a little vicious. In the finals we are in front of DE Supreme Court Justices and others who are looking for someone polished, smooth, and polite, who would represent DE well in the national competition (in the prelim. rounds their style often works).

On to nationals in May!

yeah - you first usually go through state Championship, then regional and then onto national.

Here is a thing on the Bands of America, where the various high school bands compete.

Quote:
90 Bands and Three Days of Excitement!

With performances by 90 bands from across the nation, exhibition performances and three days of special events, Grand Nationals is widely acknowledged by the band world to be the most exciting and prestigious marching band event. The three day event also includes an Expo, Student Leadership Workshop with Tim Lautzenheiser, Celebrate America!, the Indianapolis Public Schools Marching Band Tournament and other special events and clinics.
There are also things for cheerleaders and so many other groups, such as sports, etc - where you are determined the be the best in the country.

Congratulations Mercutio. I hope you win nationals - unless there is a NJ team in the running that is.

yes.

almost all states send a team, as well as the Mariana Islands and Guam.

two years ago when we went we ran into the NJ team at the Philly airport, but we didn't play them in the competition. You play 4 power-seeded rounds and then they have the finals.

Hey, my school just lost in the finals! Tell me how you do. I always was interested in the forensic team, but I'm not competitive enough. That is a big accomplishment. Congratulations!!!

Er - I think I may be on my college's University Challenge team. How did that happen?

Kudos and Congratulations, Sun-star! What does a Challenge Team entail at that fabled institution to which you have "gone up" and to which lesser humans merely aspire?

Thanks JD! Very flattered. But don't you just hate it when siblings do stuff that you know you won't match.

Sunny, may I shed some light upon this one?
You took a test and did well in said test. Thus, you may be picked from the sqaud of 5 for the team of 4. Then, if your team of Hilda-beasts succeeds in qualifying from Oxford colleges, we may hear the fine words 'St Hilda's - sun-star'.

Hope this helps.

Oh, you have to use Mr Schmigglesworth as the mascot.

Very lucid, Janny... University Challenge is a TV programme where teams from each university compete in a general knowledge quiz. Oxford (and Cambridge) colleges are allowed to compete separately, but we have to get through lots of rounds before you'll see me on TV

YAY! I got appointed to be Harvard Model Senate CoPresident! Meaning I get to run the recruiting miniconference for our larger Model Congress. Not too much actual, you know, authority, but it sounds real good

There was no eating of me, of that I can assure you. By second past the post I mean... well...

The prefects got to vote... don't ever believe 17 year olds can do anything maturly without a popularity contest. So a minor twiddle and 'the vote was very close' later, I was declared winner.

I do feel ever so slightly guilty, apart from the fact that the other guy with loads of votes didn't want to be it.
