Considering that Luthien was the fairest child of Illuvatar, there is certainly a strong case to be made for her being just as attractive as any Maia, if not more so. I think there's quite a bit of evidence that Thingol was, shall we say, a Studmuffin .
Yes, Attalus, I do find that to be quite bizarre as well. I imagine the reasoning behind it is fairly simple - if a fangirl is going to lust over a character, they will invariably imagine them in sexual situations. People being what they are, it's more appealing to picture that person they are attracted to in the arms of another character they are attracted to. I don't know how that's any less disturbing, but hey, that's just me. :eyeroll:

I managed to avoid looking at the link.
I think I"m very glad I did! (and yes, he might be a studmuffin, but it's fun to abuse him! We gotta pick on SOMEONE, ya know!)

Since I don't have too many of the HoMe books, I was just curious about how much the 'Men of the Silmarillion' are "fleshed-out" by some of those works: The Lays of Beleriand... War of the Jewels... etc, etc.

Hogwash and Balderdash, the whole concept. When people do this sort of thing (reading contemporary social states) back into the Bible it is known as eisegesis. Common enough to have its own name! So in this sort of Tolkein backreading we should probably call is "I"segesis!!! Look its already nearly blinded someone!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAYYYIIIEEEE!!!!Run from it like a Balrog.

I don't understand why you all make such a fuss about those pics, since the artist does not claim them to be in character. I think some of her pics are good and some are not so good. Is it the homosexual aspect that bothers you?

Yes, since the sexual beliefs of the Elves are so clearly stated in the HoME books.
Anyhoo - let's see - for the human side of my halfelven-ness, I must say Faramir has always set my little heart aflutter! Reminds me of Tuor ... But Faramir's not in the Sil - hroom, hroom, let me think if there's anyone else ...

And yeah...for me it's not the homosexual aspect but the application to Tolkien's work... and anyway, aren't they closely enough related for it to be incest also? I don't know the "rules" about half-cousins... If you read enough fanfiction, you get used to it... but still, reading and seeing are two different things, for me at least. Hm.... are we still on favourite men in the silm? Me, I'm another Finrod-obsessee Alllllllllright... got to go to class... Last edited by Elemmírë : 11-17-2004 at 01:54 PM. |

I was just curious if any of that extra, EXTRA LONG amount of information lent a deeper, more intimate understanding of their... characters!

Hey Valandil, aren't you a man of the Silmarillion? (Or HoME?)
