I could've told you that. My old band instructor always seemed irritated that know one know who it was. He frowned whenever people said "oh yeah, I know! This is that song from Babe!" It's not a bad song though.

hmm...I'm not too fond of idiot pigs with whiney voices. I do like James Cromwell, though. Very cool. Oops. This is the Classical Music thread. Forgive me.

I have been listening to Rachmaninoff's "Isle of the Dead" and Symphonic Dances.

I have "Night on Bald Mountain" from Fantasia. There's also part of William Tell Overture on my Clockwork Orange soudtrack. Pretty cool. I like the Saber Dance too.

yep me too.
all those small but great pieces are called "symphonic poems" or "tone poems".
there is also this great symphonic poem by Richard Strauss called "Till Eulenspiegel's merry pranks", which is one of my favorites.

and thranduil, have you ever heard anything by Berlioz?

Oh my...you're pretty preoccupied with my avatar, aren't you. I guess I kind of do, but I won't even claim to be as pretty as Rinoa. Her hair is darker than mine, and a little longer, but I guess it wouldn't be too much of a strech to say we look similar. However I can't date you unless you're just like Squall, and you talk to me too much .

I was just in Vienna (Wien). They recently put in a "Music Mile" in the pedestrian mall: Every so often there is a star in the walk with a composer/performer from 'classical' music. Here is Berlioz's

http://www.musikmeile.at/media/walk/filez/61/stern.jpg

To see all of them go here:
http://www.musikmeile.at/start_en.php

For the "interactive walk" you need some plug-in thing.

I was also in Mozart, Hadyn and Johann Strauss's houses (of many they had). Mostly rooms with headseats, a few original scores, programs from performances, pictures; in Hadyn's house they had a piano and spinet of his and in Straus' they had a small organ and a violin and a piano.

Off this topic, I played a band version (cringe) of the Symphony no. 3 by Saint-Saen in my high-school. I take organ lessons once a week for about 1 1/2 hours and go to a church to practice on their pipe organ about 4 times a week. I love it. It sounds so wonderful. I could sit and listen to organ for days.
We have two cd's of this by the Philly orchestra with Eugene Ormandy and the same organist. They were made about 20 years apart I think? Everything's the same except the tempo. The older version is at least twice as fast. Interesting how conductor's style/taste changes.

I'm really enjoying a piece by Henryk Gorecki called Symphony No.3 - Lento E Largo - Tranquillisimo. I heard it at the museum today when we (german friend and I) were in the jewish WWII section.
  • No, Mother, do not weep,
    Most chaste Queen of Heaven
    Help me always.
    Hail Mary.

The lyric was based on a message found scrawled on a Gestapo prison cell wall in 1944 by an 18 year old girl Helena Wanda Blazusiakówna.
