Yeah, I have trouble with certain sounds in some languages. I hate the simple U in French (my au-dessous sounds like au-dessus, and the meanings are entirely different!

), and the R, L, whatever it is in Japanese.

Has anyone read Lord of the Rings in another language? I want to read the Dutch version but I can't afford it. If you've read one, what did you think of the translation?

The Arabic language has the most beautiful alphabet I've seen. I want to learn it someday, too. After I get fluent in Russian and Portuguese, and learn French, probably.

Arabic does have a beautiful alphabet but few languages can compete with French when it comes to euphony.

I really don't understand why people think French is such a beautiful language, or the 'language of love'. I prefer Japanese. It has such a soft tone and you can express so many things through your choice of words and the way you pronounce them! I love Japanese

I would really like to learn Russian as well, so I can finally read the sources on the Russo-Japanese (1904-05) war myself.

I'm proud that I knew about five of those words without looking them up, and sad that the ones I know are probably being used incorrectly, somehow

I think the first part looks correct, you even have a Ã§ in FranÃ§ais!

But I'm not sure what you wanted to say in the last part of the sentence. The 'est-ce que' is to my knowledge used in a question. And you used the infinitif of 'to know' instead of conjugating it.

Bonjour Antoine, je m'appelle Sarah. Mon FranÃ§ais n'est pas atroce (j'espÃ¨re) mais en mÃªme temps, je fais encore beaucoup des erreurs.

As I was trying to fall asleep the other night, I came to think of a language oddity. In the English language, all nationalities on the British Isles have the suffix -man:
Englishman, Scotsman, Welshman, Irishman. Also just across the English Channel, we have Frenchman and Dutchman.

Apart from this small portion of the world, there are no nationalities which ends in -man. There are just Spaniards, Swedes, Turks and whatnot. Well, there is Chinaman but it's considered a bit pejorative and we say Chinese these days. Chinaman and East Indiaman were also names given to trading ships bound for Asia hundreds of years ago.

Just some observations!
