Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe newer cars are built to crumple up when they hit something, because that helps absorb the impact. So technically in a minor crash, the tougher car is better off because it wont get more than a little ding, but in a major crash the 'tougher' car is actually more dangerous because the entire force of the impact hits the driver rather than the front/back of the car absorbing more than a little of it.

I could be wrong, but that's what I've heard.
