The 3rd and 4th dwarves were Nori and Ori.

Gollum

Very well then try this one.

In the riddle contest between Bilbo and Gollum, what was the first riddle that Bilbo asked?

P.S. you get bonus points if you include the riddle's answer.

Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still.

Gollums answer: "Chestnuts, Chestnuts!"

Er, that's a tough question to answer without looking it up -- all that one has learned about Numenor, Eressea and Valinor gets in the way. And it was only mentioned very briefly in "The Hobbit," wasn't it?

Just a guess: in the West?

Its an oblique refernce to Valinor I figure...thoguh I don't whether Valinor as such existed in '37.

If that was a guess, Lady of Ithilien, it was a darn good one.

The brief reference is to the wood elves, [paraphrase] who unlike the high elves, never journeyed to Fairie in the west.

Sam Gamgee Yippee!

Thanks, barrelrider 110! It was indeed a guess, but afterwards I spent an enjoyable couple of hours going back through and trying to find the reference - it wasn't easy. Was surprised to see it was exact . . . it's like a song, I guess: parts of the "lyrics" come back to you now and again.

Anyway, earlier I did just sort of jump in without answering a question and so have only just caught up. The turn passes to the next poster ---

Nobody in 24 hours? OK, then . . .

Here goes --

We all know about the elephants (Sam's Oliphaunts) in LOTR. Where can one find elephants (at least mention of them) in The Hobbit?

I do remember a reference to elephants, not "oliphants"... elephants. Where it is in the book I havn't a clue. Now where did I put my old copy of TH or a better question is, who "borrowed" it? Hmmm.

Ah-ha! I found it.
Page 1
Quote:
what is a hobbit? I suppose hobbits need some description nowadays, since they have become rare and shy of the Big People, as they call us. ... There is little or no magic about them, except the ordinary everyday sort which helps them to disappear quietly and quickly when large stupid folk like you and me come blundering along, making a noise like elephants which they can hear a mile off.
What tree is the elves' favourite?

Arwen Undomiel Excellent!

Do you know, I missed that first reference to elephants? Was looking forward to saying the elephants were, in a manner of speaking, in Bilbo's dining room:

Quote:
"Great Elephants!" said Gandalf, "you are not at all yourself this monring--you have never dusted the mantelpiece!"
Beeches were the elves favorite trees -- the dwarves heard "disquieting laughter" and singing in the beech section of Mirkwood and it's spelled out in the description of Thranduil's palace (yes, I had to go look )

Hmm. OK, name four species of birds who converse with characters in The Hobbit. (Hint: Am not counting Thranduil's informants, as no particular species is mentioned, and also not Beorn's owls, with whom he no doubt could talk, because we never see them hoo-hoo'ing back and forth.)

Oops!

I withdraw the question -- Christiana answered it first, and I missed her post until my own had gone up.

Sorry, Christiana!

Sam Gamgee Yep!

Crow it is -- Balin commented that they had been calling Bilbo and the dwarves bad names as they explored near The Mountain's front gate. I think that gives you the right to ask two questions, if you want.

Nobody's posted for a while and I really like this game so I'm gonna ask a question, if nobody minds...

What was distinctive about Thror and Thrain when Thorin met them after Smaug's coming to the Lonely Mountain? (Particularly their dwarfish traits)
