Of course! The most common pet was the rat. Then the snake, then the balrog's with a face that looks as if it was taken from a cow (as in the movie).

What's the exact temperature of the dragon's fire breathing?

Depends on the Dragon.

Smaug (ie Red Dragons): Roughly 10000°C ±1000°C
Black Dragons: 5000°C ±500°C
Golden Dragons: 15000°C ±1000°C
Green Dragons: No fire they used acid
Blue Dragons: No fire they used lightning

No, not many people dies from cancer, and especailly not when the cancer kills them in few minutes, and even more rare that the dead guy is an istari.
