My first contact with classical music happened when I was 15, trough a k7 (remember those? ) that came free with a bottle of Ballantine's! Good way to start, huh? But don't worry, my dad drank the scotch, I just listened to the music! lol
On side one there was Mendelssohn's "Fingal's Cave" and "Morning Papers Waltz" by Johann Strauss. Side two produced Albinoni's "Adagio for Organ and Strings" and Mussorgsky's "Night on the Bare Mountain".
I became addicted to it at the time, and i've been in love with classical ever since.

Oh, and by the way...

Ives
Grieg
Elgar

What oboe cd's would you recommend? or music for oboe and piano/ oboe duets? I have a John Mack, Allan Vogel (oboe obsession), J.S. Bach oboe concertos, Hoffman oboe concertos, Albinoni & Telemann oboe sonatas/concertos, and Handel oboe something. And music minus one intermediate oboe music on a cd.

These include Britten's Metamorphoses and Hindemith's sonata, some Schubert, Paladihle, W.C. Bach, and others.

Am I missing anything major for oboe?

And, yes, I do play the oboe (and piano, starting organ).

I love oboe! I think the Vancouver Wind Trio have an excellent CD. I haven't listened to it in a long time, but they are very good.

I think Roger Cole is the oboeist, and he teaches oboe at the University of British Columbia.

When the soprano Francesa Cussoni absolutely refused to sing a certain aria in the way it was supposed to be sung
-in a certain opera-the composer, Handel took her aside to a window(I imagine it was several stories up) and told her :
"Madam, if you do not sing this aria the way I want you to, I will throw you out this window".
she sang it the way wanted by the composer.
singers back then were infamous for adding and changing parts from the way the composer had set them.

yes, we shall.

oh yes i was saying in the Teacup cafe that I liked the 'Holberg suite' alot. In fact, I'd say its Griegs best composition after the piano concerto.

and have you ever heard of Rikard Nordraak?(another norwegian composer, and a friend of Griegs)

Sorry, but I haven't. I'm afraid I don't know as much as I would like to in general. I couldn't take humanities because I was in band. Maybe that would've helped.

oh, maybe you should go check out some music history books. if you have the time that is.
Music history is so fun(IMO), there are really interesting anecdotes
everywhere in music history.
I actually posted quite few in this thread. maybe i'll dig 'em up and stick 'em in one post for you.

Yeah, sounds like there are [a lot of good anecdotes]. I was looking back from before, and I never posted when I got back from Madame Butterfly. Well, anyway, it was really good. The opera house was beautiful! The sets were really nice too. And of course, everyone played/sang very well.

just about. We were kind of late getting there though, and my aunt had to go look for a parking space so she ended up sitting somewhere else (that she could get in after the performance started) and then came to sit by us where there was an extra seat) so I guess there were some spots left. I was really surprised at how close the seats were together. They really crammed people in there!

Just making sure that Opera is still as popular as I hoped. .

well, on the 23rd of this month, I'm going to see Benjamin Britten's 'War Requiem', in Nashville.
I'm very proud of our orchestra and conductor. . Not as talented as Atlanta's Orchestra, but still very impressive.

Yeah. I'd ask you how you felt about Dostoyevsky but that would be a little off topic .

Where do you listen to music? Do you have a lot on CDs or do you listen to the radio a lot or what?

I have a few CDs: Tchaikovsky (the one with the 1812 overture) Beethoven (movements from various things) Rachmoninoff, Mozart, the soundtrack from Clockwork Orange...I listen to classical music in the evening on NPR and then nightside (jazz) after that. I also hear a lot by playing things on the piano.
So tell me about Dostoyevsky then.

yay! saint-saens' "organ symphony"!
i'd been looking for that theme from the movie "Babe".
at first i thought it might be by Schubert or Brahms.
but i found it, and i love it!
