Why on Earth

would "old spins" be more accurate than "new spins"?

Shows an odd belief that translators in previous times had nothing to win by establishing their own forms of orthodoxy.

Not always.

1 Kings 14:10

King James Version
Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.

New International
10 " 'Because of this, I am going to bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam. I will cut off from Jeroboam every last male in Israel—slave or free. I will burn up the house of Jeroboam as one burns dung, until it is all gone.

I think the idea was that it killed the idol-worshipper, actually, so yes, molten.

Ah, yes. That makes a lot more sense. Still, if he really did that, then wouldn't that make Moses evil?

Whoops, see you in the Theology thread!

Actually, Rian is right (I went and checked). Moses "burnt" the gold, then ground it up, then made the idolaters drink it. Wouldn't be deadly, although it wouldn't be fun either.

The older translations don't tend to spin so much. Back then, they had more of a reverential awe of Scripture, and tended to translate it pretty literally. There was some spin, but a good deal less.

"Nasty stuff", as in "scandalous stuff".

I don't think it's as bad as some people make out, but when you get right down to it, I don't think it's okay.

This is a colourful way of saying "male". That is very different from what we are talking about.

EDIT: Here is a lexical entry for the word translated "effeminate" or "catamite"

malakoV,a {mal-ak-os'}
1) soft, soft to the touch 2) metaph. in a bad sense 2a) effeminate 2a1) of a catamite 2a2) of a boy kept for homosexual relations with a man 2a3) of a male who submits his body to unnatural lewdness 2a4) of a male prostitute

"... that which pisseth against the wall" is the most hilarious phrase ever!!

Also, "...take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone," is the snap felt 'round the world. Ooh, burn!

There is always something new and completely awesome to be found in the Bible.

I find it amusing that this thread has debased to poop deck jokes (arr, me swabbies) just because I referred everyone over to Theological Opinions

Perfect world was it?

just how exactly?

It is, indeed, entirely possible that the word and meaning of "spin" is indeed hardly comparable -
