Mallorn leaves are silvery in spring and golden in autumn, which I took as a possible explanation of 'head twice crowned'. 'Feet were stars of gold be wound' could be referring to the golden elanor-flowers that grew on Ceryn Amroth. But as I said, the heart still eludes me.

You are spot on with the elanor, but are out on a limb with the mallorn leaves. Try a different interpretation of the twice crowned head, and perhaps along that vein you will discover the heart.

Good riddling, Earniel!

Wouldn't be Galadriel? Since she lives in Lothlorien, her feet walk on elanor. I don't know much about her "twice crowned" but she lived long enough to have at least 2 if not 5 kingdoms. She is certainly wide renowned.

EDIT: Didn't see that part about it being other than an actual character. Oh, well. I'll wait for rejection before I make a frowny face.

EDIT EDIT: I recant my Galadriel guess in favor of Lothlorien. It has had two names (or crowns?), Laurelindorenan and Lothlorien, the heart could refer to Galadriel, who is widely renowned (as I before noted), and the ground (feet) is covered in elanor.

Hello Midge, and welcome back to the Riddling thread once more!

The two names are not the twice crowned head. Galadriel is not the heart. However, your interpretation could fit the lines, and I will give you honorable mention for it.

Even with this incorrect guess you guys are getting closer to the solution, but haven't quite nailed it down.

Riddle #3

Hello Riddlers! Here's a new itch for those still scratching for solutions...

A beam which has no support reveals the time and place of this port.

Here are re-postings of Riddles 1 & 2:

Riddle #1
What do a hobbit, a rabbit, and a king's head have in common?

Riddle #2
Head twice crowned.
Heart wide renowned.
Feet where stars of gold be wound.

I am happily surprised to see this thread jump back to life. Another fine group of riddles KK.

I'll take a shot at riddle 2. My guess is based on the hard work of previous guesses and the ensuing hints.

Head twice crowned.
Heart wide renowned.
Feet where stars of gold be wound

Cerin Amroth

The mound at the heart of Lorien
The Stars (Elanor we know from previous guesses) grew there
Cerin Amroth was crowned with 2 circles of trees (mallorn being one of them)

I hope

A tongue in cheek guess for riddle #1

What do a hobbit, a rabbit, and a king's head have in common?

They were the key elements to the hobbit invention of the game of golf.

Bandobras Took (hobbit) knocked a goblin chieftains head (king - a bit of artistic license applied to make a chieftain a king but, I'll go with it) down a (rabbit) hole

like I said - it's a tongue in cheek answer.

I'll hold my guess on Riddle 3 for a bit...

I bet you're right on this one. It sounds very plausible to me. I kept getting hung up on the Crossroads (which featured a king's head and followed shortly after the hobbits had their rabbits) - but Keith K said that wasn't it.

Hello Will, and well met! You are quite correct. Topped with two distinct rings of trees, Cerin Amroth lies at the heart of Elvendom here on earth.

Thanks to all who contributed, especially Earniel who actually named the place, but missed the interpretation somewhat. Well done, all!

Bingo! The rabbit dug the hole that the Took in question knocked the head of the King of the goblins of Mount Gram into - which invented the game of golf, according to the author.

riddler's note: In my edition of The Hobbit, this goblin is indeed named a king. See for yourself in the chapter An Unexpected Party just after the dwarves finish their musical interlude.

Mucho kudos to you, my friend. Welcome back!

My edition as well. King it is. I stand corrected.

And that Goblin king's name was... GOLFimbul! Which is clearly how they got the name.

Exactly! That was a good riddle. Had y'all stumped for over a month!

Here's an easier one...

Fifteen collars under a golden crown.
Of the earth yet not earthly bound.

This is an awesome riddle (if my guess is correct - otherwise I don't like it at all )

Quote:
Fifteen birds in five firtrees,
their feathers were fanned in a fiery breeze!
But, funny little birds, they had no wings!
O what shall we do with the funny little things?
Roast 'em alive, or stew them in a pot;
fry them, boil them and eat them hot?”
13 dwarves + 1 burglar + 1 istari = 15
They are "collars" in the colloquial sense of the word - i.e. someone who has been caught.
Not earthly bound refers to their liberation at the talons of the eagles
The golden crown (and this part I'm not so sure of) refers to the moon that is illuminating the whole scene

Seriously KK - this is a brilliant little riddle - I laughed out loud when the answer came to me. Kudos my friend! I wish I could come up with gems like this! Of course, if I'm wrong, I'm taking back this whole last paragraph.

Yes - those are the best kind! Much more fun than one that is solved right away. But man - it's so hard to write these really good ones! I commend you for it!
