I believe it happened like this: Maedhros and Maglor argued about whether they should take the Silmarils from Eonwe, Maedhros insisting that they had to because of the oath, Maglor saying the oath would end up broken somehow no matter what and that they should give up to minimize trouble. Ultimately Maglor gave in to Maedhros and they seized the Silms; each of them kept one. Maedhros ended up jumping into a chasm of fire; Maglor threw his into the ocean and wandered off, never to be seen again. Or something to that effect. But Maglor was only second in singing to Daeron.
