I too get stuck on words and phrasing. Google is a great help, you can do seaches with "citation marks" to see how many hits a certain phrase actually gets (and then determine whether that phrase is actually in use or just part of your imagination).

As for your sentence - The lake was now quite peaceful (or calm), not a stir could be seen on its (or the) surface. - I'd say no way of writing is more correct than another.

Or if you don't mind going for a less literal translation, you could write: "The lake was now quite peaceful, nothing stirred on its surface."

That's an old post but, erm..

Oui, j'ai lu la version française du "Seigneur des Anneaux".. c'était bien traduit, je pense.

Did you try googling it?
On all fours should be a correct way to write it.

Thanks - to think that one has to get stuck on minor details like that.

Does anyone know what the word 'e-meutes' means? I believe it's French.

I have to sing, "For when threatened with e-meutes, and your heart is in your boots there is nothing brings it round like the trumpet's martial sound," for Pirates of Pinzance and I cannot for the life of me figure out what the word means! I dunno if the director will even care if I know or not, but I'd like to know for my own benefit .

I finished my first set of learn Russian CDs! I'm very proud of myself. I think that my next step, besides finding more CDs, is to get a dictionary and a basic grammar book. I'm mostly really happy that I've actually been consistent with my studies. I can't help but think that if it weren't for Final Fantasy VII I would know Russian fluently by now. What I mean is, I learned Japanese instead. Does anyone speak Russian here?

According to my dictionary, the most likely possibility seems to be émeute meaning as much as uproar, uprising or rebellion. Since I do believe I remember you had a policeman as part, that could make some sense.

I found something here that may amuse anyone who is interested in languages.

Be warned, it's addictive!

That's something else. You can get striking results with just one word. "Rats" became "Infractions" by way of "Rapes" and "Breaches".

I don't say you that I love you, the kiss or don't embrace you, causes, which I deceive with my bread roll. I am not I in the morning, which astonishes simply with my throw of the adhesive of the love.

If to the side of the conversion and the name and address of the language it thinks, as that, if must the considering, completely relative it is opened. If it executes, this is good.

This looks like a description from a manual on some electrical appliance... Guess what the original sentence was

When thinking about translating and language in general, one has to keep in mind that it is all relative in the first place. Do that and you will be fine.

That's right. Love is like glue. When you're in love you're all sticky

...or in the sack...

At any rate, I'm having fun. Teaching a friend of mine Farsi, and it's proving more challenging than I thought it would. He already speaks German, so it helps since he has an understanding of the KH sound, but his accent is getting the better of me. I don't know how to get around the Nasal higher tones he has somehow acquire! Arg!

Oh yeah, because you thought teaching someone Farsi would be just a walk in the park, right?
