Gollum

At the Council of Elrond, Legolas is telling of the capture and escape of Gollum. At what place did they decide to cut short the hunt?

BTW, Flupke....I'm a girl.

It is stated in

Houghton Mifflin Co. 1 vol edition
Book 1, Ch. 9 pg 151, p.1 last sentance reads exactly:

Quote:
But Nob, the Hobbit servant, came bustling in long before they thought of ringing. He brought candles and a tray full of plates.
Your question:

I think my answer does answer what you asked. Nob brought candles and a tray full of plates.

If you go later in the book it states:

Pg. 163

Quote:
Mr. Butterbur had arrived with candles, and behind him was Nob with cans of hot water.
IMHO, This would also answer your question correctly.

later pg. 171
Nob states"
Quote:
I've ruffed up the clothes and put a bolster down the middle of each bed. And I made a nice imitation of your head with a brown wollen mat, Mr. Bag - Underhill, sir,
IMHO, This would also answer your question correctly.

Depending which page (location of text) you pulled your question from and the wording of your question, I think the answer could be
  1. He brought candles and a tray full of plates.
But you say this is not correct.
  2. hot water
  3. bolster & brown wollen mat

P.S.
Hopefully one of these answers is closer to the mark.

Ok Lets Get This Straight Now

[QUOTE=mithrand1r]It is stated in
Houghton Mifflin Co. 1 vol edition

Apparently some books have one thing and another publisher or edition have something else. The same passage reads different in many.

My edition is by Ballantine Books, 1965, while yours is much newer. Just like The Bible, the words change with the times.

Anyway, the hobbits were in the room talking with Strider and BB and N came to the door, BB put candles on the table and Nob was told "take the water to the rooms".

Now whether you accept my explanation or not, you may post the next question, with a bit more humility.

Actually, now that you mention different editions, I vaguely remember something about JRRT describing his frustration with the publication of LOTR and the changes to his text by well meaning publishers.

The explanation is fine.
(Though I guess it makes it more challenging to have a trivia game amongst friends. )

I apologize if my reply came off harshly. I just could not "see" another answer after looking at the text that I have access to and the wording of your question.

With some humility:

According to Gandalf, What is worth at least a gold piece?.

According to myself; people like mithrand1r who can understand explanations and graciously express differences.

Thanks for the comment. It was not the answer that I was originally looking for, but If you wish you may have the next question.
