Eh, I completely missed Yule. I spent most of the shortest day of the year on getting a crashed computer running again.
I never recall, is the Yule-log something edible, or something you only put on the fire on this day? |

Traditionally it's something you put on the fire with herbs and stuff so it smells nice.
Not sure what they do in modern times.

Eärn, it can actually be either one. Both are old traditions.

Ah, that explains it. For years over here a christmas log (or yule log) is the log-shaped ice feature you eat at the end of the christmas dinner. Couldn't fit that with the mentions of yule logs in fires since it didn't sound like they were talking about crême brûlé.

Oh, you meant that kind of yule log. I wouldn't have thought of it like that.

I would guess that the original is the log that you put in the fire, and that the food (I'm sure I've heard about it as some kind of cake as well) then was made as an edible imitation of the wooden log.

OK - we're getting some snow here in Chicago. A few inches New Year's Eve, then some through the day yesterday and through the night. More expected all day today - especially what we call "Lake Effect Snow" (from moisture picked up off Lake Michigan).
The worst part of it is the weather-people. They just seem to crave attention, and they're not the best at handling it. Just saw an article with this jewel of a quote by a meteorologist. "Most places probably won't see a lot of snow, but the places that do will get a lot of it." So - you probably won't get a lot of snow. But if you do get a lot of snow - you will get a lot of snow. Anyway... long-term they're calling for more snow on Saturday-Sunday-Monday - along with temperature drops for Monday-Tuesday with highs at or below zero. Fun-fun-fun!!! Plenty more weatherman action to come!

But since the 'Moot's system for posting photos is blech, you'll see the phases and the ready one later

What?! No Christmas tree contest? No political machinations or runs for supreme headshipness? I realize I have been away from the 'Moot for a bit, but really, have I entered an alternative universe via a brane interaction and missed everything?

No - just the new reality.
You, and everyone else, coming too infrequently.

Yeah, it took everything we had to just keep Treebeard here for the holidays. He was insistant no one was going to miss him anyway and wanted to go skiing. It took our entire supply of eggnog-entdraught to convince him. So that kept us off plotting to take over the forum this year.

That's what I was thinking. Or else iron... as suggested. Or... stone?

Pretty good here. We've had lots of snow in Chicago - I think we've reached or passed our average total winter snowfall already. Getting into a thaw for now, though it's not all gone yet.
Polar ice seemed to do pretty well this summer. Hoping and praying that it builds up really nice this winter!
