Baylor has shortlisted me for the PhD program, and they're flying me out next month for an interview! I'm sure it'll be a shock going from Toronto to Texas in mid-February, still . . . ROCK ON!

I have; I spent a few days in the same city, actually (Waco), visiting some friends who had moved there.

Oh happy days!
If your having girl problems I feel bad for you son I got 99 problems and a b*tch ain’t one Tip my hat to the sun in the west Feel the beat right in my chest At the crossroads a second time Make the devil change his mind. Its a pound of flesh but its really a ton 99 problems and a b*tch ain’t one If your having girl problems I feel bad for you son I got 99 problems and a b*tch ain’t one 99 problems But a b*tch ain’t one.

*is idly wondering if that means that a b*tch is actually more than just 1 problem or none at all*
Our dog is male. He slipped and fell flat on his mouth on the stairs the other day. He couldn't stop licking his mouth after that for quite a long time, but nothing was hurt it seemed.

Just spent some quality time at my Nana's farm today... it's always a good thing to be there among the patriarchs and the general timeless antique aura of a place long-settled in the country... surrounding myself with a bit of living family history...

I'm happy about our awesome next-door neighbors. We've had so many awful family nightmare situations since we moved to Arizona, but our next-door neighbors are just awesomeness!! They are so sweet, and so fun! The dad especially is so funny - he keeps us all laughing. I went with the mom to a charity tea, and then we got home and watched football the rest of the day with them, and made up a dinner between the two of us and had dinner together. And the night before, we were all out, but our middle son got home before the rest of us and he went over there and watched a movie with the dad.
And I'm happy about the cute new shoes I got at Ross!

Yesterday - a long day, but a good day.
My wife and I left the house early (around 6 am) with our 12 year old son, for his Regional Science Fair. The original location was too full, so they put us in one on the far south side. His project looked pretty strong and we felt good about his chances of advancing. We (parents) had to leave for 4 hours though - so he was on his own. We got back and HE even felt good about his chances. So when they get to the awards, they first name off the 'Honorable Mention' group, so I put away the camera. But when they got to the T's - they called his name. We we stunned, but put on a brave face, smiled, gave him thumbs up and a 'good job' - and I got out the camera and got a picture of him holding the 'Honorable Mention' certificate. They went through the names of the next category - 'Excellent' - and finally started the 'Outstanding' awards (along with a trophy) - for those who would go to City. Of maybe 120 projects, he had heard that 37 would go on. So they read off the names. This whole time, my wife and I were both wondering if we had done something wrong in not meeting requirements, if the judges hadn't understood it, if it had to do with our school (VERY unpopular with Chicago Teachers Union), or what. Then at the end, the lady up front said something like; "We have one more award. Is ___ T___ (our son) still here?" That got my attention, and our son raised his hand. She didn't see it at first, so she asked "Did he leave already?" Then she saw him, acknowledged that they had already given him an Honorable Mention, but asked him to come up. Everything pretty much broke up then and people started to leave. Before I could get up there myself to find out what was going on, here he comes with a different certificate, a trophy and a big smile on his face. There was some mistake, and his project is going on to the City Science Fair (which is held at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry!)!!! His project was a small wind turbine that generated electricity. He compared the voltage registered on a small volt meter for two different turbine sizes. It was all low budget. The turbines were made from pop bottles, cardboard and scotch tape - turned by a blowdrier. The generator was 2 strong magnets on a nail in a box made by wrapping a piece of cardboard around them - and wrapped a few hundred times with copper wire. He designed and built the frame assembly with his K'nex toys. He saw the turbine and generator designs on U-tube and figured out how to combine them for the project. So... we got home just after 4 pm, and before 5 pm I was out the door with my 8 & 10 year olds for their Cub Scout Pinewood Derby. Well... it went long. Scheduled to go to about 7:30, but we didn't get back in the car until 9:45. To shorten this one - they didn't have the fastest cars in the Pack, but they both got 3rd place in their Dens (each of their dens has about 10 or 11 boys) - and they each got a trophy as well. They don't have a lot of trophies around the house. And now - for the first time we can remember - all three of our boys got a trophy on the same day!

PS: At the Science Fair - naturally, I took his picture with the new certificate and the trophy. He said to me, "now we can delete the other picture" and I was like "no way!" I think it's too cool to have both!

Yeay for science projects, and yeay for winning science projects! I'm not sure I could have built something like that at 12.

Nice Val! But now the other boys are gonna want some trophies too
Many things to be happy about; Got my own dose of science at the world premiere of a big touring NASA exhibition. Lotsa space history, space suits, tools and replicas of rockets, satellites and spaceships Recently got home from a great trip to Vienna. Great cafés, art and architecture - all made better by good company And went ice skating today with friends. Haven't skated in years so I was a bit rusty but it was good to skate on ice again
