Info that should be calculated as well IMHO to shed more light on this chart: the average distance one drives (influencing the amount of gas needed) which in the Netherlands has risen with re-urbanization and probably in the US also, and perhaps for comparison a pie-chart on the allocation of income in both periods.
Interesting blog though. The comments on it are even more interesting. ^_^

I just found out that he is 1/4 Norwegian in fact! His grandfather's name was Adolfsen (whom moved to Finland in 29') but he "Finnified"/"Suominized"? it, making it Ahtisaari. Strange indeed.

Plane crash at Schiphol
I hope the injured people will be fine... My sister and I were on a plane back to the Netherlands almost a year ago. She called me because she was pretty shocked.

A Turkish Airline flight, type 737.
About 10 dead and 50 wounded, 25 severely, though it's not the sort of plane disaster you expect. The modern 737's seem very robust, with this accident having a low casualty figure and the fact that the fuselage did not break up significantly and come on fire. Schipol is a very professional and safe airport however, I've landed there at least 20 times and there has never been any trouble with landings, take-offs or inside the terminals..and it's really easy to get around. And it's fun seeing the Dutch signs because so many words are so similar to Norwegian Landed there this Christmas holiday actually..

Apparently it also had something to do with the ground it crashed on. It had recently been ploughed.

I guess it could have made a difference if the plane was going at a low speed, which it probably was considering that an eyewitness reported that the pilot tried to pull the nose up just before the crash. The earth does seem sort of black and soft in appearance which you would expect it to be if it was ploughed. Lucky passengers..
Probably a low speed contributed to the crash then, though I wonder the cause.. Maybe a flock of birds again?

I wouldn't say "probably". If the eyewitnesses were just bystanders and not actually working at the airport, I kinda doubt their ability to appreciate whether a plane is coming in too slow or too fast.

Actually yeah they could. It's not really that hard to appreciate whether a plane is coming in too slow when you're situated less than a kilometer from it.
It will become obvious pretty fast whether the plane is the acceptable distance off ground in relation to the angle that its nose has and what air buyoancy it seems to have. When people in the area then witness that the nose of the airplane suddenly was pulled upwards, but failed to make a difference, you realise there's less than enough speed. Don't need to be an airport employee to figure that out
