The movies are popular with the masses. Your reason makes sense JD.
But, to make any kind of action film (which The Hobbit would be) you need 1) Plenty of opportunity for action scenes 2) Characters that can be played by big-name, sexy Hollywood actors. The Hobbit has a lot of action, but the only "sexy" characters are Bard the Lakeman, and maybe Thranduil. Even Jackson wouldn't devote half the movie to them. You may have noticed Jackson doesn't seem to like hobbits in his movies - that's why.

And of course you could bring in Orlando, he'd have a thing for this Laketown girl but she gets attracted to Thorin......., she's got a thing for tossing dwarves, you see. Thranduil finds out about it and tries to think of some way to get his son out of Rhovanion for a while but has to wait almost 80 years for a good excuse. Actually, The Hobbit might be more suited to PJ then LOTR, lots of action and cgi stuff to do and a pretty clear linear storyline, but you'd need someone to keep him "on task", as is said in educanese jargon. I would have some (modest) hope that Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh might fill such a role.

Why on earth would you be upset that legolas was in it? Hes an elf and could very well be in a shot during the feast when the dwarves are in mirkwood.(he is the prince) Okay actually your right. I'm sick of legolas stealing all the women!!

Legolas only gets a Figwit type apperance though, no lines or plot arc of any kind! And no lingering camera shots either.

I hear he takes out an oliphaunt in ROTK, maybe he could help shoot down Smaug? Good eyesight. Oh, I know, he can point out to Bard Smaug's bare spot, replacing the thrush. (Actually, PJ might like that one).
