Christ almighty! Auckland doesn't get below 10 degrees cel. generally, although we've had the occasional cold snap (very rare -3 degree once.)

Canada is cold. It usually starts snowing on the indian reserve around the end of october. I've been there when it has. Ontario can get bitter called because it's like the plain states and doesn't really have any buffer to stop the wind.

When I visited Canada (on a trip combined with Vermont), it was VERY VERY HOT. It was during a freakin heat wave. Not too many places had air conditioning (at least in vermont... dont remember too clearly whether canada did or not).

I don't think it's ever been below a 50 degree average here. Well, not that I can remember, of course I dont pay much attention to the weather. It's all good for me.

Great, the Canucks are going to poison our medicine. (OTC Drugs)

The 62-to-28 vote today marked the second time in less than a year the Senate voted to permit pharmacists to buy prescription drugs in Canada, and resell them in the U.S.

Canada and their poison

It's a joke...mmmkay?

All this talk of weather reminds me of when my Canadian relatives came down to Texas for a visit. It was summer, hot as hell (as usual) and I thought they were going to melt where they stood into little puddles. I guess it doesn't get as hot in Canada in the summer and they weren't used to it.

But nevermind, that's nothing serious - and yeah yer right we do use some of those terms when referring to ourselves ('specially "Rooinek" & "Soutpiel" [you prolly know why ] and 'Dutchman' etc), they're not really racist, more reflective of the language differences. Also a lot of it is 'in' joking - which can be lost on outsiders.

GM, sorry for implying that you're racist - I'm just a bit touchy today. The jokes were actually quite good (at least we're more civilized than Brits & Aussies )

Where in Zim did you stay (ye've given away yer age by referring to it as Rhodesia )

No apologies necessary- my wording was a bit 'in yer face'- should have said those hairy-back etc. etc.

By the Afrikaaner references, I was just trying to say, in my own clumsy manner, that to my anglo-Canadian ear a lot of the distinctiveness of the SA accent comes from the Dutch influence.

Though from someone who was there in the early 1970s, I stand in total awe and admiration of what South Africans of all races have accomplished- if you had told me you could have pulled this off without a bloodbath, there's no way I would have believed it.
SA is truly one of the great inspirational examples of the twentieth century
(and, no, I'm not just trying to suck up )

Quote:
Now the South Africans are coming, and since they have the basic qualification (white skin) , they are pushing the rates down even more.
Right, this is referring to the situation not only in Taiwan but also Korea, Japan, Hong Kong etc. where a 20-year-old blond American/Canadian woman is on the top of the heap as far as hiring is concerned- no matter what her experience or qualifications.

Mr. Patel, Ms Nkomo, Mr Hernandez, Ms Wong- no matter if your ancestors have lived in an English-speaking country for two hundred years and you have no trace of an original accent, if you ain't white, you're at the bottom of the list- even if you have a masters degree in Education or linguistics. (This is less so at the college/university level, where paper qualifications matter more than public relations)

Mind, this is not all racism- though a lot of it is; East Asians (generally) look down on darker-skinned peoples- some of it is simply an inability to discern accents and to take the default position that white people are "real" English-speakers.

And there is the hierarchy of accents that I mentioned - though if anybody's looking for a job at US $20 an hour, private schools are begging for teachers right now! With the SARS thing (already gone) people are leaving, and nobody's coming.

On behalf of Canadians everywhere I'd like to offer an apology to the United States of America.

We haven't been getting along very well recently and for that, I am truly sorry.
I'm sorry we called George Bush a moron. He is a moron but, it wasn't nice of us to point it out. If it's any consolation, the fact that he's a moron shouldn't reflect poorly on the people of America. After all it's not like you actually elected him.

I'm sorry about our softwood lumber. Just because we have more trees than you doesn't give us the right to sell you lumber that's cheaper and better than your own.

I'm sorry we beat you in Olympic hockey. In our defense I guess our excuse would be that our team was much, much, much, much better than yours.

I'm sorry we burnt down your white house during the war of 1812. I notice you've rebuilt it! It's Very Nice.

I'm sorry about your beer. I know we had nothing to do with your beer but, we Feel your Pain.

I'm sorry about our waffling on Iraq. I mean, when you're going up against a crazed dictator, you wanna have your friends by your side. I realize it took more than two years before you guys pitched in against Hitler, but that was different. Everyone knew he had weapons.

And finally on behalf of all Canadians, I'm sorry that we're constantly apologizing for things in a passive-aggressive way which is really a thinly veiled criticism. I sincerely hope that you're not upset over this.

We've seen what you do to countries you get upset with.

Thank you.

Rick Mercer

Muahahahahahaha! Take that, Canadian bashers!!!!!!
Now look. I was perfectly happy to put aside all our little differences (looks pointedly at gollum9630) BUT THIS MEANS WAR!!!
