Oh, Lin, I can't say I have any online resources for decent farsi news or spoken word. I can search around if you wish.

No problem! I know what Farsi sounds like now, anyway, because I recently met an Iranian couple who went out of their way to teach me some Farsi phrases. It is beautiful. Thanks anyway.

At times like this I really wish I had a Babel fish. Hey! But thats only when one is listening to a foreign language. No help while reading one.

ok. My humble efforts at trying to climb a pseudo-linguistic ladder.

It looks interestingly like the rope or the snakes themselves...

One of my university buddies speaks Farsi. What a lovely language! I wouldn't mind listening to an Iranian radio station if I could listen to that beautiful language.

Same goes for Finnish. Gorgeous language.

Latin is pretty great; it's also the language of science along with Greek. I like Latin a lot too. All the words I know are either from scientific names (glauca, palmatum, rubra) or from words we appropriated into English use (et cetera, ipso facto, quod erat demonstrandum).

It's nice to know that while there isn't a Latin-speaking country anywhere, the language lives on. And British kids have to learn it in school.

I really want to learn Latin too. Might be because I'm an ancient Rome-ophile, but I think I always liked it.

Question:

A word has come up:

Does the term Recind (or Rescind) mean that a person rejects or votes against a motion or statement?

As in: I recind (or rescind) the offer.

"Rescind" is correct. It doesn't mean reject, but repeal or revoke. So more like when you make an undertaking and then go back on it.

In a translation of a Swedish children's book I have come to a part of a sentense Id like your feedback on.

What are more used?

I saw a deer at the edge of the forest.

or

I saw a deer at the fringe of the forest.

Is it a question of British and American English?

Glad to know.

Best
GW

Another question...

All the trees were of the exact same height

or

All the trees were exactly (of the?) same height.

Glad to know.

"I saw a deer at the edge of the forest," is more common, I think.

If you really want to use the other phrasing, it might sound more natural as "I saw a deer on the fringes of the forest. Maybe. I would go with at the edge.

For the second one: All the trees were exactly the same height.

Thanks, WO! most obliged.

Here is another (appears that I get stuck on minor phrasing problems all the time)

There appeared to be, not a single unauthorized twig anywhere to be seen.

or
