It seems "hence" meant "here" way back when.

He had to go "far from here" on his journey.

Apparently Shakespeare uses it that way, too. I remember from some amateur Shakespeare production, when after a while we got into doing lots of our ordinary talking in quotes, one of the quotes we used a lot was "Let us depart from hence" (e.g. when we were going home).
