I saw it on the news yesterday.
And this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7383837.stm You know, this thread has some quite depressing entries...

One of my favorite poems gives my opinion on this:
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world... From 'Desiderata'

"Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind"
So we'll just have to enjoy the fleeting flight as a spec in the wind of life as long as it lasts

Well, here's a quote from me:

This is the worst news I've read.. ever.
http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/ur...cle2417866.ece Basically says the death toll could reach, embrace yourself, 1,5 million deaths if serious, urgent action isn't taken in Burma over the next couple of weeks.

And of course the @!#$%@#$ running the government are doing their best to try and stop aid getting to their own people- and China and Indonesia are backing them at the Security Council.
Their old name really suited them- the SLORC. It sounds like an evil creeping blood-sucking slime-monster.

It's disturbing and very very sad.
Those soldiers, don't they have family that is starving somewhere? Don't they want to help them? Are they really that brainwashed?! At least there is still some aid getting in: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7394410.stm

TIME wrote an article today wondering whether the world community should simply invade the country as 1.5 million deaths is completely unacceptable. I wonder..

It would completely destabilize the entire area. All the surrounding not so stable countries will fear that the same might happen to them, they'll get more paranoid and try to consolidate their power, secure internal problems with more vigor and in doing so violate even more human rights.
It's basically the whole Tibet-China or Taiwan-China problem again.

At least it's important that the international community, headed by the UN, steps up and speaks out with unmistakable clarity.

Hmmm, yeah. They should tell them that aid is meant for everyone, not just for the junta. Forcing something... I'm 99% certain that it won't have any desired result.

Well personally I think any attempt to invade would spell an even greater disaster. But in such instances we need action, and so I hope these air-drops they are speaking of is made reality. The basic problem is that such a disaster needs massive involvement by so many people, and if the Burmese gov't is unwilling then the only choice left must be to empower the victims themselves, sending loads of aid from the air.

Yes, starting a military campaign that would surely result in civilian deaths so that we can provide aid to keep civilians from dying has a ring of illogicality to me. And whats sad is that their state news organization spends all their time reporting on the new referendum the junta is pushing, showing general after general and their wives going up to vote. Then only after that do they show coverage of some soldiers handing out bags of rice to a few people followed by a declaration that they have the problem completely under control...
