That is indeed what I was thinking of - the first section describing the scene from the top of the waterfall and the second describing things from Gollum's point of view. I actually posted a quote in the other game thread that was from this same scene!

Edit: I didn't read Val's post - stinking new pages - but you caught me, Val!

A valiant attempt my clever friend, but the Istari are not among the five that will solve this Third Age riddle.

Keep thinking.

I don't think this is right but, I might as well eliminate it from the possibilities.

Thorin Oakenshield and Company.

Thorin and company were the first "army" to arrive at the battle area of the "Battle of the 5 armies". This was the first step that brought about the end of Smaug and/or the Orc army. Since Bilbo was involved - the finding of the ring is also the first step in "ending" Sauron.

First of all, you are right about being wrong. Thorin's army is not the first of the five I seek. Consider it eliminated.

Also, eliminate the ending of Sauron as part of the solution. He has nothing to do with this whatsoever.

Keep thinking. I don't want to discredit the Riddlers of Entmoot by giving out clues on this one. I'm confident that y'all will solve it as it sits without any extra help.

I will say that it's not anything too far out there, as far as the solution goes. Pretty straight forward, actually. So don't bruise your poor brains on it by dreaming up elaborate scenarios. Muahhh!

What, to a hobbit's mind is useless, worthless, and precious all at once?

could this be a "mathom" ? an object with no use but a hobbit is unwilling to part with.

Good luck, Riddlers!
could Bilbo be the first of five? "The Tale of Five Hobbits" is one of the titles of Bilbo's part of the Big Red Book. It is found in the first few pages of the last chapter, The Grey Havens, when Frodo is handing over the keys to Bag End to Sam, the beginning of the end.

It could indeed. You reasoned that one out well, my friend. Mathom is the answer!

Interesting. That could well be the subject for a riddle going forward. (after y'all have forgotten all about it. ) And it does fit the clues. Sorta.

However, they are the wrong five. Bilbo is not the character I seek, and the ending at the Grey Havens has no connection at all.

I am really beginning to like this riddle. Can the Riddlers of Entmoot truly be stumped?

Never! One of y'all will figure it out. Keep thinking. I'm rooting for ya!

Is it an end that is stated specifically in the text (like, one that is named) or is it an end that is inferred when something is over (like how the third age ends when the fourth one begins)? I feel like I need to start with all the beginnings of ends and then connect the "five" to that. *sigh* this is driving me nuts.

All I will say is that y'all are looking at this " beginnings of ends" stuff entirely wrong and out of context. Once you figure that part out, you will easily be able to verify* it by using the first of five bit. Remember, this riddle is a Who Am I?. Also remember that it is a Third Age riddle.

I suppose I could add that the riddle is entirely sourced through LOTR. You don't need any other books.

*ie. identify the character

Got it!

Bungo Baggins. The eldest (first) of five children and the hobbit that built (beginning) Bag End.

Stumped - we are not... Excellent riddle.

Here's an amateur's attempt at riddling:

More than any warrior slaying
never a sword wielding
by the sword dying

Hello, and welcome to the Riddling Thread, Taniquetil. Thanks for submitting your first riddle!

Could it be Glaurung? His bane was a sword, and he never wielded one. Also, he was involved in much slaying.
