NOTE: some bands only had ONE hit. Like Procul Harum with their Whiter Shade of Pale.

So if there only are 45 REALLY good ones - its not too wonder at.

Leonard Cohen's 'One of us cannot be wrong'. He sure knows how to use words..

An eskimo showed me a movie
he'd recently taken of you
the poor man could hardly stop shivering
his lips and his fingers were blue
I suppose that he froze when the wind took your clothes
and I guess he just never got warm
But you stand there so nice in your blizzard of ice
O please let me come into the storm.

This is random, but I've got my head stuck on the soundtrack to the movie version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. I'm not that big on scary movies, but I loved the music in that one.

Go figure.

I had a part of a song stuck in my head earlier today, but I couldn't remember any of the words, and it was going to bother me for the rest of the night.

So I had to call my brother and hum him the 10-seconds of the tune I was fixated on, which he managed to correctly identify as "Everywhere with Helicopter" by Guided By Voices.

Catchy song, I think.

I'm a Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits fanatic!
"Once upon a time in the West" performed live by Dire Straits in 1983 in their 'Love over Gold'-tour. Listen to it a few times and it'll grow on you It's pure chill-out

& the lyrics:

"Some people get a cheap laugh breaking up the speed limit
Scaring the pedestrians for a minute
Crossing up progress driving on the grass
Leaving just enough room to pass
Sunday driver never took a test
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west

Yes its no use saying that you dont know nothing
Its still gonna get you if you dont do something
Sitting on a fence thats a dangerous course
Oh, you could even catch a bullet from the peace-keeping force
Even the hero gets a bullet in the chest
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west

Mother mary your children are slaughtered
Some of you mothers ought to lock up your daughters
Whos protecting the innocenti
Heap big trouble in the land of plenty
Tell me how were gonna do whats best
You guess once upon a time in the west

Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west

Once upon a time in the west"

My obsession for the past couple days has been "Mona Lisa Overdrive" from the Matrix Reloaded soundtrack. Half of that is just because it's absolutely epic as a DDR song (well, Stepmania). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mgL3kJ2vsM

"Gravitate to me" - The The

I've been watching you for ages
You're like a boat without a mast
Struggling with the tide of destiny
Between the future and the past

I am the lighthouse
I am the sea
I am the air that you breathe
Gravitate to me

Through the ether
And the mists of the mind
You will come to me
To lay by my side
To stroke my hair
To cuddle my flesh
And to quell the torrents
In my subterranean depths

This world ain't strong enough
To keep us from each other
For we are kindred spirits
Born to become Earthly lovers

I am the lighthouse
I am the sea
I am your destiny
Gravitate to me

There is something within your voice
Something behind your eyes
Something inside your heart
That is beating in time with mine

I know you
From a previous incarnation
I know you
From a previous incarnation
I know you!
From a previous incarnation

Gravitate to me, gravitate to me
Gravitate to me, gravitate to me

Alright. Let me admit it.

We guys, here in this country (at least our generation) were slow to English Music scene, and by music I mean Rock. Of course I had seen Britney gyrating and Shakira moving her hips, during my mid teens. And with due respect, all that Pop, Rap, Hip-hop et al did not appeal too much. And so did the latest xyz-rock thats the in-thing and also the category of black/death/weird metal(Marilyn Manson and folks). So all I listen to is a bit of old Metal, like say Black Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica(BTW did any of you guys listen to their latest 'Death Magnetic'. The cover of 'The Ecstasy of Gold' is good, but unforgiven-3? ) Anyways I also do listen to a bit of progressive or alternative or whatever it is called, actually Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, Pearl Jam and so many one-song-wonder bands. But my preferences still lie with the Old. Floyd and Dylan on the top. Trippy Music and philosophical lyrics . Theres of course The Beatles, The Doors, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Straits, The Who (a bit of 'The King' too)and who can forget the signature riff of 'Free Bird' by Lynrd Skynrd ?.

So you see, Im totally out of phase with the contemporary scene. Any good bands with progressive styles, philosophical lyrics?

Yea! I have some prog, philosophical lyrics for ya If you have any program to buy/download music I strongly recommend these And Floyd, Dire Straits, Led Zep, The Who, they're all great!!
I've seen Roger Waters in London, The Who I've seen twice I haven't seen Dire Straits original set-up, but I've seen Mark Knopfler 3 times (Daltrey & Townshend with band in the last few years, I'm too young to have seen them with Moon and Entwistle)

So here's a bunch you should try if you haven't already..

"Errors of My Way" - Wishbone Ash

"Throw Down the Sword" - Wishbone Ash

"Lorilei" - Wishbone Ash

"Good Morning Beautiful" - The The

"The Violence of Truth" - The The

"Slow Emotion Replay" - The The

"The Low Sparks of High Heeled Boys" - Traffic

"Thick as a Brick" - Jethro Tull

"Aqualung" - Jethro Tull

"Lucky Man" - Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Just ran across these guys. Hard driving guitar rock and no whiny singers. To the folks here that are a bit "older" I can see these guys on stage at the Filmore in the late 60's.

Trust me! Just one of the above mentioned names is more than enough for my fellow countrymen and music lovers to go all green with 'one-of-those-seven-deadly-sins'

Well I did dream of watching Pink Floyd reuniting and performing live. Couple of years and I probably could've caught them somewhere in Europe. A Time Machine seems to be the only improbable solution now.

BTW Wishbone Ash was a good find.

Hehehe.. well I can't say I haven't been lucky

Although I did watch Roger Waters & band (including drummer Zack Starr, son of Ringo Starr, who is by the way infinitely better than his father) in Hyde Park perform an awesome live act I still dream of witnessing the kind of grand stuff that was on display during the Wall Concert of 90' (one of a kind really) or during the Pulse tour. Megalomanic stuff you know!

I'm glad you liked Wishbone Ash. They're a guitar tour de force like none other. You should listen to Living Proof. Good song.

If you haven't already listened to them before, try Uriah Heep.
Recommendable songs:
July Morning
Easy Living
Look at Yourself
The Wizard
Lady in Black

Enjoy!
