As far as I know and understand (the articles I read weren't the most fresh ones..), it's not determined by environmental factors, so temperature doesn't seem to play a role.. The thing is, they can switch. Sex cells are differentiated from undifferentiated cells that seem to be able to differentiate into more or less any cell type. When the hydra enters gametogenesis, though, all stem cells become sex cells, and within one individual they are pre-determined. "Male" sex cells can switch to female, though, but not the other way around. Then there are all kinds of cool mechanisms by which this is controlled so that not all individuals become completely female. Many species are hermaphrodites, too. Anyway, even as adults they can switch their sex. Which is pretty cool, and has also been found in some fish. And all of this makes me awfully happy.

Hydra are so fun. Not so much for Dafnia, but the rest of us find them quite amusing.

Thanks Sane!
I'm happy because it is Friday afternoon, I rode home on my bike with stormwind in my back and when I got home my mum and sis were also home, so we could have a nice cup of tea together. Just like old times!

Indeed, it is Friday. The winds have been quite fierce here too, and we have snow again! I'm sure it'll be gone before tomorrow, though.. :/ Anyway, I still haven't biked home but I have a feeling the wind won't be in my back. Nice no matter what.

I had the wind against me yesterday... when I had to catch a train. I was still in time, barely. But then my train got stuck in a small village because of a tree on the tracks, so in the end I didn't make it to class on time anyhow.
But I like storm nonetheless. With a cup of tea. They are predicting snow here as well for tonight!!!

Still, I'm happy they accepted me though. "They" being a choir I wanted to join.

I went out with my sis today. We went to an open campus (for her) and then out for lunch. She took today off for this. Yay!

Likewise! I've got the fourth noted in my diary. I'm looking forward big time to the Life in Cold Blood series.

Mwaha....ahaha....AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I got a hair cut. Shhhhhh. I was told I could get my hair 'trimmed' a few weeks ago, so I went ahead and did it because I'm tired of feeling like my hair looks like crap. It's definitely a new look for me... the hair is relatively trimmed on the sides, but we left a lot of the length on the top. It's not a weird hair style or anything, just not something I've ever worn before. I kind of like it . EDIT: Herm, well my mom says that it really looks dramatically shorter. Dang. I was hoping it wouldn't be too bad, but she says it is. So I may get in trouble over it, but hopefully not. Last edited by Tessar : 02-02-2008 at 06:43 PM. |

Start of Chinese New Year holidays!!! Twelve days off-YAY!
Especially after the usual end-of-semester mad rush- everything from kindergarten pageants to cramming students for college-entrance interviews and essays. On the down side, it's the Year of the Rat, which is good for new beginnings, but the worst year for us Horse types- we're direct opposites. So, HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR! (even if it's not till Wednesday.)

Yay!
I've been auditioning for summer dance intensives with a bunch of ballet companies. Like a lot of auditions. Every weekend. But I not only got into one of my favorite ones, but I got FULL scholarship including room & board for the whole thing! I'm so excited and I can't wait to go!
Also in good news, I also got into other good programs with money, but I'm very happy with the one I picked. |

Happy New Year GrayMouser! Have a great spring festival and watch out for the "Year Beast"
How will you celebrate? Any chance that you'll get some red envelopes full of money? Or is that only for the younger ones? You don't like the year of the Rat? One should think a person with your nickname should like a year dedicated to a rodent
