Dr. Pangloss has all the good lines. Because of which, he now serves as who I model Doctor Geldhoff in ZAQ-1 after. Without all the "Best of all possible worlds," stuff.

Dr. Pangloss:
"...the love that reigns in heaven above is mirrored in the marriage of Candide and Cunegonde." Chorus: "Candide and Cunegonde!" That answer your question? ... So that's what Hornpipe from the Water Music sounds like. Ha!

I have some excerpts, it's... not always my type of thing.
I did listen to all of Monteverdi's "Vespro della Beata Vergine" today, as well as Rachmaninov's "All-Night Vigil"

That's apparently all that exists in the recording world: excerpts. It's apparently not well known.
Oh, what's that song that goes: "What I say's not what I feel, What I feel's not what I show, What I show isn't real, What is real--Lord, I don't know!" I've searched half the internet for that one, just to hear it again.

Well, Live performances of classical are not "excerpts"...you can enjoy the coughing of the frontrow as much as you can the coughing of the tuba...

You mean they actually play classical music live!? I knew there was a reason my parents take the long route around the Hollywood Bowl front sign.

*sigh* I'm trying to learn (what we assume to be) Bach's Prelude and Fuge in C Major for the organ... what a pain! It's not that difficult, on the one hand, but it's giving me a devil of a time.
Bach should be glad we can't know for sure if he actually wrote it or not... if I knew it was him, I'd dig him up and make him rewrite the thing to be more easily played . |

Sorry for not responding for so long. It's a long time ago that I moved in my preferences about St. Matthew from Solti to Gardiner. I would also reccomend Suzuki's version. Haven't listened to McCreesh, but if I recall correctly, it's a OVPP (one voice per part) version (like that disc by Rifkin. I'm glad you liked it). I'm not sure I would like the OVPP take in St. Matthews...

So you've switched over to Gradiner eh? I have to say, Solti's "Missa Solemnis" was something of a bore. I couldn't understand why everyone was raving about Beethoven's Mass...until I got the Gardiner version . One of the best things I've heard. BTW, I've really grown to love my Klemperer Bach Mass in B minor. It is large-scale, but IMO, it comes off very well. I do want to listen to Gardiner's version of that as well. All I know about McCreesh is this: his Messiah is awesome. I've listened to Neville Marriner's, and Robert Shaw's versions, and each has it's own value, but the McCreesh really shines. The Rifkin Bach Cantatas are great... Quote:
BTW, are you guys learning it for organ or singing? Hmm...singing the C major Prelude and Fugue would be something quite...strange.

Anyone notice that the radio is playing the very compositions you've been listening the most to?
This week so far, KUSC has played an excerpt from the Carmina Burana (although they talked over it trying to pscyh you into pledging ten dollars a month), the Hornpipe, Jupiter from the Planets, and others.

Seriously, the station that carries NPR down here, it programmes Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, Orchestral Suites, and Violin Concertos about 60% of the time each year. I love Bach, but isn't that a bit much?

Yeah! I was reading about it on Naxos.com just yesterday...I'm also happy because Naxos' Buxtehude Organ series is finished, cheap and a findable .
I have Vol.3, which is good. I also have Vol.2 from another series (Ornament label, Ernst-Erich Stender) which has a better organ, but these are a little harder to collect, I imagine.

Classical-Vent: Can't seem to keep my files organized. And, thanks to a problem transferring my music from my old hard drive, and my bad habit of leaving CDs out of their cases, I've lost half of the music I have on CD.

The next recording of the Missa Solemnis that was on my list was one of the two Toscanini readings. I hear he could really sound it out... BTW, I haven't heard it yet myself, but there IS a Missa Solemnis reading by the Nashville SO, under Schermerhorn, which I am curious about. Quote:
