Sorry, I forgot to answer this. For anyone else wondering as well:
Octopus+Nautilus=Nautipus (or Octilus, as the case may be )

And there you have it.

A really quick sketch. I was experimenting with motion here (something I do rarely, and never with an octopus, usually non-sedentary-style animals like fish or squid)
Experiment
I remembered about halfway done about your advice, Telc, so I really dont know how close to those instructions I stayed.

ha, it did work Nautipus. You can see that the right side with the suckers is the side in shadow while the left side with the tentacles going up is the sid efacing the light.

If you remembered to do it earlier in the piece though it would have been more effective and consistant; I think you got the idea.

New piece

I am sure you guys remember this one, from the fantastic four sequential I posted sometime ago. That was in pencil, this is the colored version.

Teacup Cafe

I worked on yesterday. Took me a bit to color in, etc, but I got it finished. On second thought I would have gone with yellow around the door, and inversed the colors on the sign.

After scanning, I did have to use a Photo editing program to brighten up the colors, since the original in scanned form was too light to properly see.

I'll also post this in the Teacup, if the mods don't mind.

You have an eye for color

You know that saying, your first reaction is usually the right reaction? Well, using a yellow sign and red text and not inversing those colors was the better decision. You need "contrasting colors" which is a legit technique you used naturally. The fact that the text is red too was the only correct thing to do, as the background/tree trunk has a reddish brown color that helps to bring out the text against the yellow sign; if the text was blue it would have not looked the same (it would have looked horrible).

Again the purple colors with the green grass is perfect as green and purple are what you call complimentary colors. You used analogous colors in the grass in the form of yellow highlights in the green grass because yellow is a major property of green and as used, are considered one color.

Did you have some training? I would have assumed you did except that you stated that you wished you inversed the colors on the sign, which would have been a fatal mistake.

Though not necessarily the way I like to render things, your rendering of this piece was nice as well, as it is a rough cross hatch technique that shows texture: perfect for the tree trunk, bricks and grass. I have been told in the passed by instructors that I could be a bit more rough and not so fine with my renderings.

I like this...

Thanks for your analysis, Tel! . On second thought, you are right. The sign is fine as it is. Now the only thing I'm not so proud of is the chimney pipe. It stands out as hastily drawn. And maybe the welcome mat wasn't necessary.

I don't have training, but I always like drawing trees and forests. Sort of my specialty.

I do agree that the mat is the least color coordinated part of the piece but I don't think that matters; it's a mat.

What I would change, which you could still do easily, is add some yellow as highlights in the door, cobble stones and the chimney bricks. The result is that it would go along with the theme of the piece - finishing what you started - and the overall piece would look a lot richer in color. You would have to beef up the original colors in those things though so it is not overwhelmed by the yellow, which you should add with care.

Hm. Perhaps yellow for the cobblestones. Not sure about the chimney bricks though. Reddish/orange would contrast badly with the tree. I could to a moldy gray/green. That way it doesn't conflict with the tree, and it'll be a different kind of green from the grass.

Nice! I like yours better than the original, probably because of the strong lines and that one yellow lamp. It looks like a scene shrouded in morning mists with the sun rising behind the clouds behind the bridge whereas the original just looks old and dusty.
