Liked 3 especially- it went beyond the mere ability to draw (which you do very well El tel!)

it had emotion and dramatic quality -

- number 1 (beyond the excellent technique) left me mildly cold.

2 i felt accomplished but a tad dramatically insipid - but my main concern was the story telling was disjointed.

Don't get me wrong El Tel you obviously have a real talent there - but in both story-boarding and graphic characterisation, being hyper-critical (which i only mention because you DO have a real talent) - they need fine-tuning, for me.

Great line technique, just needs a tad more artistic direction in both the graphic drama and story-line elements.

You are a bloody good GA though!

very best, BB

just to qualify - i think the skill is extremely good - i'd just look at the story-telling side and perhaps within that heighten the visual drama in expression and go for the kill dramatically in impact.

best, BB

Butterbeer, thanks for the page by page critique. I agreed with many different points; very helpful.

PS Butterbeer, by "GA," u mean graphic artist?

Again the line art here was done by my favorite comic book artist Jim Lee. I actually always wanted to color this particular Namor so finally, I went ahead and did it.
it took just over five hours to complete, could have been and should have been about 2 hours quicker than that though; I had no paricular reason to rush...anywho, enjoy.

Happy you liked it

This was fun to do. I have only recently decided to concentrate on the coloring side of cartooning. I am doing more inking too.

And I have not forgot about that legolas I promised to do in my, "I want to draw a tolkien character," thread. I just had something special planned for it, but I'll probably just go ahead do something; it's not like I am gettin paid or somethin.

More work

I wasn't going to post this one but then I realised you haven't seen me do any of this type of art so I said why not.

This is a commission I did recently. My baby cousin, isn't she cute. I enjoyed doing this one.

No, not charcoal, it was pencil. I used 4 different kinds: 2H, HB, 4B and an Ebony pencil for the jet black areas.

A note about charcoal:

I choose not to use charcoal for this type of thing, less control. In fact, I hated charcoal at one point for just that reason, but over the years as I got over myself and grow in appreciation for art I grew to love the effect that charcoal would have. You can get highly realistic work with charcoal if your willing to sacrifice perfection for mood and spirit to capture the character of a peace; obviously making these observations about charcoal lends much to your work when using mediums that allow for more control as in the peice posted here.

I, by no means, consider myself an artist, and gereally do sketches of animals in their environment as I see them, but I really love the softer, darker leads for my projects. They seem to have more definition and character to me. At least when I'm filling in the lines of a piece.

I understand about charcoal. When I first started drawing I tried charcoal. I ended up all dirty and upset.

Here's a five-minute sketch I did in class.

I like this Nautipus (does octopus have something to do with ur username). i see that you have some promising rendering skills here and you are using an artistic technique naturally without knowing exactly what you are doing (I say so only because you claim not to be an artist). So I will clarify for you so you can use it to more effect in the future.

Line weights - Is probably the last important thing I learned about illustrating 2D images (and most likely the most important). It is simple however, it entails drawing thick lines vs thin lines. thick lines belong farthest from the light source while thin lines are closest to it; the closer the thinner etc.

This is actually an exercise anyone could do. Choose an object and then establish the light source (s) (try to start with a single light source at first). Then just draw the thin lines vs thick lines in and you will be amazed how good it would look without rendering the piece at all. What it is doing is creating the illusion of depth: a simplified way of drawing shadows, which is important. It starts with the line.
