I only mentioned that one thing - how was that taking up arms? I'm glad you weren't implying that too. I've been told by a bunch of Europeans in the past that British English is better than American English. It's not better - it's just different. We have 226 years of history seperating us - not to mention a huge ocean. I just wanted to make sure you didn't feel like you were speaking an inferior version of English because you learned it in the US.

And to let you know - I was afraid that some of us - including me - might have scared you off. Glad we didn't.

I know that's what I said ............... bloody American-English speaking Germans!

EDIT: *After a quick discussion with a posh friend via MSNmessenger.....*

Apparently the proper form of ettiquette is not to use Mr at all, esquire should be used at all times.

Another piece of pointless information from the Warren

Erm, I was joking.........In my experience a lot of people from different cultures make huge social cock-ups, I tend to let them get away with a lot because it's not usually intentional.

When we got to highschool we also had to take German and Latin as a Mickey Mouse (it wasn't an exam subject unless you had chosen it as part of your curriculum - stupid fool that I was I actually chose Latin )
Oh I definately doubt that South Afrika is the only land where languages are compulsory subjects. Here in Flanders (Vlaanderen, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium) we get French at the age of 11 (decided not to mention the grades because I'm pretty sure they won't correspond with the way other people's education system is divided).

It's compulsory, although not in Wallonia (Wallonië, the French-speaking part of Belgium), they get the choice between English and Dutch and I'm not sure if either of them are compulsory. Which is why a reasonable part of the Flemish can speak French but only a few people in Wallonia seem to be willing to take Dutch lessons. But I'm not going into that any further, language strife goes back a long time in my country and it'll takes ages to explain it fully.

I got English at the age of 13 and German at the age of 17, both compulsory. Though I believe that defers from school to school and the type of education you take.

Languages

When I was a lad it was compulsory to study languages.....dunno what it's like now tho'.

We had to study French from the age of 7-14 and german from 11-14. (you could go on to study both until the end of high school - 16 yrs old).

Yeesh it was so boring (needless to say, I never bothered absorbing any of it).

We had our choice on what language to take. The two most offered are French and Spanish. A lot of schools also offer German, Latin and Italian.

i took Spanish in high school and French in college.

Don't worry about Ruinel, Case Sensitive, she's a bit of an air head. And I don't know what you mean about Germans and lack of humour, my German friend from Hamburg is the craziest person I know!

If I'm an 'air head', I grieve for your lack of brain cells, sheep.

Yup, it's different. And better. (From an American)

Why is one flavour of English better than another?

LOL! All right, was 'flavour' wrong in this context?
I want to know why GW thinks British English is better.
