Is it Cecil Beaton, Hasty Ent? I wish I could recall who the sitter is...

Here's a Cecil Beaton portrait -

" Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.”

~ Cecil Beaton

yep, Lotesse, you're right

from the National Portrait Gallery's website: Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton was the most famous British photographer of the first half of the twentieth century and also a successful writer and designer for stage and films including Gigi (1958) and My Fair Lady (1964). The subject of the National Portrait Gallery's first photographic exhibition in 1968, curated by the then Director, Roy Strong. Beaton presented 240 of his prints to the National Portrait Gallery in 1968. A further 700 plus prints were accepted in lieu from the estate of his secretary Eileen Hose in 1991 who also bequeathed the copyright in Beaton's graphic work and a number of his sketch books.

and the sitter is one of my favorite poets, W.H. Auden... bit of trivia: in 1954 he reviewed Tolkien's Fellowship of the Ring for the New York Times, link here (registration required) http://www.nytimes.com/1954/10/31/bo...ellowship.html
and in 1956, his review of Return of the King: http://www.nytimes.com/books/01/02/1...r=1&oref=login

Heh.

Phwoar! What a fabby picture, Lotesse.

This quote from the ROTK review caught my eye: "most of us believe that the essence of the Good is love and freedom so that Good cannot impose itself by force without ceasing to be good"

I know; isn't she the most delectable, amazing thing? I love Marilyn Monroe SO much, and this beautiful photograph captures her so well, I think.

I had NO idea that that was W.H. Auden. For some reason, I was stuck on German; I thought it was some 20th century German writer, but I never thought Auden. Those Auden reviews were great BTW; thanx Hasty Ent.

O.K., while we're on the topic of photographers, here is a picture by one of photography's most important, influential photographers of them all - can you guys guess who made this one?

No one's getting the photographers? Well, here's a new one to ponder - I thought of it since our resident Japanophile is online right now. Katya, can you guess the artist here?

the photographer whose work you've posted, Lotesse, took over 300 pictures of his wife, a famous American painter.... here's one of them

Had to look it up, since we all appear to be stumped:

Katsushika Hokusai, a modernist before his time, according to the stuff I read.

A powerful iconic image, copied by many others:

And while we're on the oriental theme, I've got one at home that looks kind of like this, except on a long, thin scroll-type thing:

Sorry about the strip effect. Embarrassingly, I have no idea who it's by!

I'm stumped. Only guess is that it might be from the Sung Dynasty, but that's not based on any recognition other than it's commonly accepted that Chinese landscape painting reached its peak then. Beautiful image, Gaffer. And Hokusai is a favorite of mine, I'm surprised no one guessed that one since his 'wave' has entered the vernacular pretty much (as you've shown). The photographer Lotesse posted is Steiglitz. He was married to Georgia O'Keefe and ran a very influential gallery in NYC called Gallery 291, if I'm not mistaken. Very important photog, with an ego to match. Photo world joke: What's the difference between Steichen and Stieglitz? Steichen believed he was God, but Stieglitz knew that was incorrect because knew that he was God.

I KNEW you knew Stieglitz, Hasty Ent, and I wondered when you'd say so. Stieglitz did have a grotesquely massive ego, but so do a lot of important artists - I guess when you're truly a great and you know this about yourself, like really self-aware while actually being a real, natural-born genius artist, it gets hard to be humble!
Yep, Gaffer, that's Hokusai - an amazing, very important Japanese artist. Gaffer, I cannot begin to guess who might be the artist behind that 3-piece scroll painting you posted.

Oh - BTW, Hey, Gaffer and Hasty Ent, and everyone, post as many new pics in here for us to guess as you want to; the more pix of art to look at in this thread, the better. Everything you guys put up is so beautiful; all art postings in this thread are highly appreciated.

O.K., in the meantime, here's a new one to ponder, from another of my FAVourite, favourite modern artists:

Yes, yes YES! You got it, it is indeed Schiele. Arien, you feel like giving us one to guess? I eagerly await your contribution!
