Sorry I see now... the article on the Quartet for the End of Time. I'm reading it now.

I was really really busy when you sent me those things, and I forgot to go back and read them later.

I'm tellin' ya, Messiaen is the real thing: a great modern. Ligeti is rubbish...(so far) EDIT: new link for him, btw.

Go for his organ music.

Shosty was born in 1906, of course...(roughly 8 yrs before the revolution).

Sir Malcolm Arnold died... ...

If you don't know his name from Symphonies or Concertos etc, you might know it if you watched "bridge on the River Kwai"...he wrote that whistle tune and the rest of it in ten days...

woah...I completely missed that.

The news here is full of the Amish school shooting--at a school we drive by all the time when visiting relatives.

I actually found out about on sunday before last...but forgot to report it ...

That just happened? Like a few days ago, or earlier last week?

PipeDreams was never broadcasted in my area. And we didn't have fast enough internet to download the programs online...

I have a lot of catching up to do. This will be fun

My new organ music just came

Widor Symphony V (I've been working from photocopies of the 2nd and 4th movements)
John Rutter Variations on an Easter Theme (organ duet)
Messiaen L'Ascension (I had a photocopy of only the first movement)

Ooh! The Widor must be good...I've only heard the Allegro from that, but even that convinces you this guy is a true master of the organ...Did you know he was friends with Albert Schweitzer, who also played the organ? I wonder if there are any recordings...

Alas...I have negelcted John Rutter far too long....

BTW, we use to visit Pennsylvania, and we were goods friends with the Amish there....very sad news

Allow me to endorse this recording of Bach's B minor mass. It is definitely the "old school" big version, but it shines true with love. I also have Eugen Jochum's recording for Philips, good but not special.

http://www.amazon.com/Bach-Mass-mino...e=UTF8&s=music

Also, this recording convinced me of the true masterpiece that Beethoven's Missa Solemnis really was, under the right guidance...(as compared with Solti)

I listened to all of these today:

Mozart, Piano Concertos Nos.14, 20-25 ...great homework music.

Also listened to all of Bach's Art of Fugue (Wolfgang Rubsam) ...that work gets greater and greater with each listen!
