A few years ago, I rented "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" on dvd. Some of the background drawings for the Hobbit were good, very colorful. The thing I objected to a lot in LOTR besides the fact the film fizzled out in the end was the portrayal of Sam. He resembled the village idiot. The purple color of Elrond in The Hobbit looked pretty bizarre. "The Lord of the Rings" looked like something on a bad LSD trip. Still, though, there were parts of it that were not too bad, such as the hobbits under the trees with the wraith on the bank.

And yes, that thing with all of the elf smurfs...???What was up with that???

In LOTR...I could never get over "Boromir the viking"

Yeah, Sam was a disgrace. I remember seeing it when it came out

The greatest shock was that, in the pre-spoiler age, none of us knew that the film ended halfway through the story!!

I thought the technique Bakshi used to represent hordes of orcs was pretty groovy.

And then the general presence of pantless humans... that was... interesting.
Thankfully they allowed the elves, (and thus Elrond,) pants. The angle they had the council scene drawn at would have made things interestingly squicky had they not...

I remember seeing "The Hobbit" tv movie back in 77-78. I loved it then as a kid, and still love it today!
Without seeing that movie, I may never have thought to read "The Hobbit", or worse yet "The Lord of The Rings"!
While I agree that the animation is lacking, in 1977 it was really pretty good, atleast as seen by a childs eyes.
Let's also not forget that this was a made for tv animated movie that was meant for children, much the same as "The hobbit" itself was written to amuse Tolkiens children. It was later after it's success that it became the prelude to lotr.
Also having seen all of the movies, and read most everything that tolkien ever wrote. The Rankin/Bass movie atleast followed the text more closely than either Bakshi or Jackson did. Also the majority of the music in the hobbit (although poorly adapted in my opinion) were also the lyrics of tolkien. I can't say I truly enjoy the folky sounding music they used, and they have a tendency to substitute songs for drama which left the story kind of bland for adult tastes, or ones having already enjoyed the books epic feel.
I can't help but wonder how they would have done if they had Bakshi's budget to work with?
My daughter just turned 1 last month, and she has just watched the Rankin/Bass version, and seemd to love it. I have also been reading her "The Hobbit" since she was born.
Seems both still really are meant for kids!

I first watched "The Hobbit" when I was still very young, and I loved it. Ever since my first time of seeing it I've been hooked, and it's likely that it's what got me into it all in the first place. Without this simple cartoon I might not be the Tolkien fan I am today! Sure the graphics are less than great, and the songs are down right odd sounding, but I think it's the corny stuff it's made of that makes it so magical!

After my first viewing at my grandparents, I wanted more, before long I was borrowing it on a regular basis. After so many years of being in love with this classic I finally decided to ask for my own copy, luckily Christmas was near! I asked for "The Hobbit" DVD and before I knew it I owned the Rankin/Bass Hobbit, "The Lord of The Rings" animated movie, and "The Return of the King", again by Rankin/Bass. This made my day, since then I've watched them 2 or 3 times. You've just got to love 'em for what they are!

But on a more serious note, I think Rankin/Bass did a great job on "The Hobbit", however, whoever made "The Lord of the Rings" left a bitter taste in my mouth. Rankin/Bass should have done this one too, because these fools mixed animation with live action, and the characters looked like something straight out of the dark ages! I thought this one was done so poorly, but I still watch it because of what it is. Lastly, "The Return of the King" had that wonderfully corny animation of Rankin/Bass, but lacked the magic of "The Hobbit." It just wasn't as good, I don't like how they did the story as a bards song or how they made Sam out to be this tremendous hero who could chase off orcs. I'm not saying it was horrible, but none will compare to Rankin/Bass' "The Hobbit," it's just awesome. I almost had to cry at the end!

My favorite part from "The Return of the King" would have to be the whole nine-fingered Frodo thing, that was just plain funny. Well, that's 'bout it. Hope everybody has a chance to experience them all.

That was great. I mean, you don't much think of it but yeah, he only has 9 fingers. Then when you hear the bard singing about it you just think, "Oh, wow, they actually made it part of the story!"

Poor Frodo, he saves the world and all he gets is a stupid bard to mock him for the loss of a finger! XD

I will probably eventually get the Rankin-Bass set, but as a high school kid I hated the cartoon. The Hobbits looked like precious moments figures and Gandalf was bald with a wart on his head. Now that I am a mature old Oak, I think I can have a better appreciation for the films. They will bring back old memories.

...There's a lot to like in the Bakshi film...especially thr silhouette riders etc...very creative....though very mismatched with the lousy Sam.
