"contemporary hijackers" would be those painters whose work you'll find in galleries located in upscale resort areas and the occasional shopping mall... don't want to name names because I don't want to offend anyone who finds their work resonant  Quote:
a new addition to the city's cultural life is Millenium Park, site of some beautiful outdoor sculpture as well as a garden, an outdoor music pavilion designed by Frank Gehry, and a small theater devoted to dance and music that I frequent once a month or so... like any public work, Millenium Park was plagued with delays and cost overruns, but now that it's been completed, it is much beloved by the city.... I adore Anish Kapoor's "Cloud Gate" colloquially known as 'The Bean' and Jaume Plensa's "Crown Fountain" is wildly popular and loads of fun link to Millenium Park info: http://www.millenniumpark.org/artandarchitecture/ |

Contemporary hijackers is a cool term! You mean like corporate "art?" There is a lot of money in the corporate art racket, a LOT. But the idea is the same as total hijacking.
Gaffer, can you give us one? I still need to put my contact lenses in, and I can't really see the computer screen to search for an appropriate work of art... I will in a minute, but in the meantime I'd love to see what else you can give us to guess! Please?

O.K. never mind; I found a very easy, quick one here. Now, this painting hangs at the Armand Hammer in Westwood, and I have stood in front of this work enveloped and completely inside it, for like half an hour or longer. This reproduction is extremely crappy. In order to really see this work, you'd have to see it in real life. There's a seemingly infinite number of colours, all distinct one from the other, and each brushstroke is so carefully planted. I adore this painter.

I've not seen this one before, but it looks like a Van *clears throat* Gogh
Or for lens-free Lotesse, should I say Van Gogh? |

a favorite song by a favorite musician (Jonathan Richman) about a favorite painter
Have you heard about the painter Vincent Van Gogh, Who loved color and who let it show. Now in the museum what have we here? The baddest painter since God's Jon Vermeer. He loved he loved he loved life so bad, His paintings had twice the color other paintings had. So bad so bad that the world had to know, The man loved color and he let it show. Well in the Amsterdam museum I was feeling bad, And trying to find a way not to be that sad. I felt the feeling in the room sincere, Vincent Van Gogh well he seemed so near. And he loved he loved he loved life like he did, HIs paintings had things that painters keep hid. He loved life so bad that the world had to know, He loved color and he let it show. OK, so what can we say about this Vincent Van Gogh? Ellie. He loved color and he let it show, Ok, Michael, now in the museum, what have we here? The baddest painter since Jon Vermeer. He loved he loved he loved life with that heart, His paintings took off where the other paintings just start. He loved life so bad that the world had to know, He loved color and he let it show. Alright. Have you heard about the painter Vincent Van Gogh? Who loved color and who let it show. Now in the museum what have we here? The baddest painter since God's Jon Vermeer. He loved he loved he loved life with a passion, His paintings said things that men generally don't do in that fashion. He loved life so bad that the world had to know, The man loved life folks and he let it show. Vincent Van Gogh, who we talkin' about? Vincent Van Gogh. |

Oh man, Van Gogh is freakin' amazing. That work is called Hospital at Saint-Remy. It hangs, like I said, at the Armand Hammer as part of their permanent collection.
Now can you give us a new one, Gaffer? That song, BTW, is the bomb. I wish I could hear it. I'm gonna look that musician up, now, this Jonathan Richman.

Great song! I've been to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam a couple of times. Totally amazing. First time I went they had his paintings arranged in chronological order. You can see him getting more off his head as time goes on. Another time they had a special expo on his relationship with Gauguin, who went to work with him and tried to "tame" him, but failed (Hooray!).
Probably the best gallery experience you'll ever have (especially if preceded by a Koffeehuis experience ) Anyhoo, I know you're champing at the bit, so here's another of my favourite artists (couldn't find a "clean" URL so you'll have to promise not to cheat!): |

Can I just post one real quick here? Let's see if someone can guess the name of the artist who made this famous photograph. Let's also hope that the entmoot purity police will allow it! It was published in Rolling Stone magazine, I think.

No, not David Bailey. You know, this photograph was taken only hours before Lennon was shot and killed, on December 8 1980. I wish he hadn't died. I love John Lennon so much! No, this photographer is an extremely prolific portraitist, who's still working.

Here's another portrait, a group portrait, by the same artist. My favourite model here, by far & away, is Naomi Campbell. Anyway that's neither here nor there! Can anyone guess the artist behind the photos?

Right you are, Hasty Ent! I'm surprised no one got it - that Lennon picture is extremely famous. Ah, well. Do you have something new this morning for us to ponder?

here's another photographer I place in the same arena as Leibovitz: a commercial photographer whose work was so good it is now found in museums
many many extra points to anyone that recognizes the sitter

That photographer must be Richard Avedon, and it's killing me not being able to name that sitter, because he seems familiar. Is that a German guy?

Not Richard Avedon... here's a clue for you Lotesse: the photographer was English, he died in 1980.
