The key to this passage is the word "whither", which means "where". Thus the passage could have read "...nor was it ever known where the cold waters of Teiglin had taken her."

For myself any one of the kinslayings would qualify as a tear jerker. Perhaps it's because this is the dark side of the Elven history that non-elves have little or no knowledge of. The kin slayings represent the 'human' side of the 'noble elves' that mortals tend to glorify.

The slaying at Aqualonde perhaps is the most heart wrenching as it represents the one act that forever stains the Noldorin people and devides them from their best allies in Beleriand. It dooms the house of Feanor and all who follow him back to Middle Earth.

The story of Turin & Niniel floored me the last time I read it.

I love the art where Turgon, coming to the battle unexpectedly, meets his brother Fingon and friwend Hurin in the middle of battle and for a moment there is gladness in the midst of war.

And then Hurin tells Turgon that as long as he and his people are alive Morgoth will know fear, so get outta here, I got your back. Awesome.

And, Foul Dwimmelaik, Hurin is then taken by Morgoth after slaying most of Gothmog's body guard.
The rest of his people are killed and he still basically spits in Morgoth's face.
Of course he was said to be the greatest of all warriors of men, even before his son Turin.

While reading it for the third time, I get really heartbroken at the part where Fëanor hardens his heart against the Valar and leads the Noldor out of Valinor, which brings forth first the kinslaying and all the troubles of the Noldor in Middle Earth.

Of course, way up there is the whole section on Turin Turambar and the aforementioned battle where Hurin was finally overcome and captured.

I love the part where Hurin stands alone with his battleaxe and fights of all those orcs. That part is awesome. I also liked the whole Beren and Luthien part. That was awesome too.

Fingon when Turgon shows up at the Nirnaeth:
The day has come! Behold people of the Eldar and sons of men, the day has come!
All the warhost
The Night is passing!

and then Hurin, the last standing
Day shall come again!

WOW!

Well, the Narn is unarguably the best story in the Silmarrilion as it stands...

There's so much to choose from.

But if I just had to go for a particular scene, then I'd actually go for the death of Azaghâl, the dwarf lord from Belegost.

After they whacked on Glaurung and their lord fell, they just picked him up and marched off.

And wadn't nooo body gonna F wif dem.

Theoden

the whole story of beren and Lúthien is by far the most moving for me. Beren daring to steal a silmaril from the very crown of Morgoth for the approval of marriage from thingol to Beren. gets me everytime
