Wilkie Collins
Anyone read Wilkie Collins' "The Moonstone" and "The Woman in White"? I really like them. Gabriel Betteredge in "The Moonstone" is definitely in my top 10 of best literary characters. Dickens really liked Collins.

I liked The Moonstone better than The Woman in White even though the latter seems the more popular. But there were too many moments my modern sensibilities were enraged by the seemingly sheer uselessness of miss Fairlie, not an endearing quality in a love intrest. I disliked almost all characters except for Marian. The fact that The Woman in White had Marian Halcombe made the whole book bearable.
I should re-read The Moonstone, though, it has been ages. But there's was a good BBC adaption of it last year. |

Yeah, Miss Fairlie is basically an excuse for Walter and Marian to be brave. I definitely like the Moonstone better but enjoy both.
