Great choice for Smaug. He does an excellent sneer.
Three scenes are particularly vivid in my mind: entering Mirkwood, seeing the white hart and "attacking" the elves' picnic, the thrush knocks and Bilbo finding the Arkenstone. |

I'll have to think about it some more, but definitely agreed on wanting to see Bilbo finding the Arkenstone.

I also want to see the scene where Bilbo admits that it was he who gave the Arkenstone away ...
Following that, Thorin's death scene where he restores his friendship with Bilbo, has the potential to be very moving. I remember Boromir's death scene with Aragorn ...

Oh - perhaps it wasn't Thorin?

LOL! It WAS Thorin.
Although, with the casting of this, this extremely interesting handsomey short-bearded (why short-bearded?? another topic) Richard Armitage guy, seems rather a sad waste. Fili & Kili, too! God i loved them, those 3 dwarves, from way back yeeeears ago. Fili, Kili & Thorin were my favourites; I was pretty bummed out that my 3 fav't dwarves had to be the exact ones to bite the bullet. But, hey, Jackson & Co cast good-looking guys for them in the flic and, well, guess what happens. They DIE. And I'm not saying "spoiler alert" on a site dedicated to Tolkien about a story that was published & well-known-&-loved since 1939.

I wonder if they'll include the short scene when Bilbo climbs up a tree and sees the black emperor butterflies.
But don't worry, he'll come back! Oh wait, that was Gandalf in LoTR... Oh well you're out of luck, then.

Yeah, the butterflies...
The account of Mirkwood was probably what got me really hooked on this sort of thing. |

Yeah, Mirkwood's description is evocative. I wonder how much Mirkwood on screen will resemble the Mirkwood on page. The written one is straight into fairytale territory. Enchanted rivers, all those black animals, giant spiders...

I want to see the moment when they see lights in the woods from the Elves and I want to see the fight against the dragon in Meertown (or whatever it's called in English. It's been a while).

... Laketown ...
Yes, seeing Bard shoot down the dragon should be a great scene.

I wonder if the spiders of Mirkwood will be more or less terrifying than Shelob. Aren't they her distant relatives?

There is a line in Two Towers that refers to a link, but I can't recall it, probably they are her spawn.
Lots of scope, I suspect he will take the opportunity to overdose on the horror aspects. |

I hope not. He'll be wanting to keep the ratings family friendly (more audience!) so straight-out horror would be out of the question.

I would bet a pound to a penny that "sylvan mystery" will be trumped by "scary monsters".
If necessary, they'll just invent a new classification to accommodate, like they did for the LOTR films. |
