Gandalf the Grey uncloaked?
I have asked this in another Forum, so I will ask it here. In "The Shadow of the Past", Gandalf got angry with Bilbo and threatened him with letting him see Gandalf "Uncloaked." Was he speaking of revealing his true (Maiar) nature?

I do not think he would have revealed his true nature. I think he meant to remind Bilbo that he could be more persuasive if needed. I do not think he would have actually hurt Bilbo. I think Bilbo knew that Gandalf was more than he made himself appear from his previous experience.

I'm not sure Gandalf could even reveal his true nature, at least not visibly. The Istari weren't just clad in a human form, I vaguely recall them being tied to their fleshy form. So I doubt Gandalf could have shown his maian form even if he had wanted.
But I suppose he could have been able to show a certain power that, while not visible, certainly must have been percievable. Not sure if he would have gone through with it, it might have made too many entities aware of his presence.

I agree that the Istari were "clad in the guise of old men, still hale..." so I doubt bery much if Gandalf cold have just doffed such a guise. I also am not sure, theologically that an Angel, unfallen, *could * hurt a mortal. I suspect that the taller, menacing aspect that we hear of later, such as in Edoras, was referred to?

[uncontrollable levity] I hope it's something like that. I'd hate to think Gandalf would go around flashing his hobbit friends and cronies! [/uncontrollable levity]
Sorry about that.

That was probably was Bilbo quickly (and willingly) gave up the ring. Gandalf uncloaked was too terrifying a thought for Bilbo. Brings new meaning to "keep it safe, keep it secret".
