Oh it's just the greatest, except for in comparison to Lord of the Rings. But you can't have Lord of the Rings without The Hobbit!

The Hobbit is fantastic! The plot's easy to follow, but it's not overly simple. There are less names to remember, and it has a lot of humour in it - something that just doesn't make a big appearance in LotR. It's also less epic and easier to enjoy.

I love the lighthearted simplicity of TH, but I am more drawn to a book that I have to work to understand. LotR is closer to my taste, but I'm most inclined to deep, factual documentations like The History of Middle Earth by Tolkien or A History of the English-Speaking Peoples by Winston Churchill. Then again, there is another side of me that wants to flee to the whimsy found in the Hobbit and most fairy-stories. As you can see I'm quite torn.

I find the whimsy of the Hobbit delightful. I takes me only a day to read it. On the other hand I also like deep serious works.
