Ranger's Apprentice. The first book is called The Ruins of Gorlan. I believe currently there is four books.
It mainly follows the adventures, and sometime misadventures, of a 15 year old named Will who is apprenticed by the fife Ranger, Halt. Along for the ride is Will's friend, Horace, an apprentice warrior. The Ruins of Gorlan hooks you by the first chapter. I haven't gotten around to reading the next book, but this series seems to have potential.
