The Years of Rice and Salt
I suggest reading this great science fiction and alternate history novel by Kim Stanley Robinson. It weaves together a bunch of stories in a scenario where the black plague killed 99% of Europe. This leaves Islam and Buddhism as the principal religions, and the middle-east and china as the principal world powers. Here is the wikipedia entry

Have heard it's one of the best AH novels out there, and I'm a big fan of the worlds of "What-If"?

I'd like to read it, but I don't have time yet. Perhaps during the winterbreak AFTER finally writing my thesis...
Can't allow myself to start reading before it, because then I won't be able to put the book down and actually start doing what I have to do.
