What happened to the Dwarves after the 3rd age and beyond?
After the 3rd age it was said to be the begining of the age of Men. All the elves eventualy sailed to the West except for those which faded. The Hobbits ( according to some here ) sort of blended into the race of men.
So what about the Dwarves? Did they eventualy die out? It seems to me that they were screwed and forgotten. Is it possible that after a time the Dwarves received a summons from the West and that they would receive a dwelling somewhere in that land? Surely they can't stay in the Halls of Mandos forever after they die? Unlike the Elves they have a lifespan of only a few hundred years and seemingly they don't get a choice of a new body and to return to the land of the living after a stint in the halls of Mandos. Poor old Dwarves. |

If you read the appendices, it does not say anything particular about the race...but it does state that at some later date Gimli sailed to the West with Legolas.
I do not recall, but aren't the Dwarves mortal? I seem to remember some of them dying of old age(I could be mistaken).

Yes, they were mortals.
I seem to remember something written by Tolkien of the subject. If I remember correctly, he said, that nowadays all dwarves have becomed solely amusing, which is shame. In 3rd Age they still had some old fire in themselves. So that means, that there are still dwarves, but they are all degenerated into something much lesser than they were in old days. |

In the appendices it says that its rare for a baby Dwarf to be female, I believe that in the fourth age they probability of female Dwarves being born increased so mates for the other Dwarves decreased and the cycle continued until they died out.

The Female:Male ratio for dwarves was supposed to be about 1:3

The Age of Man signified 'the decline of all other speaking peoples'. Legolas told Gimli that Men will outlast them. We don't see any Dwarrows about these days, so I suppose we must suppose they have died out, or else have become very hard to find, like Hobbits.

dwarves
I also recall that female dwarves were rare. I am also of the mind that the amount of females decreased until the Dwarves dided out, sad, but true.
